PAGE FOUR ROGUE NEWS FRI., MAY 11, 1962 Ashland Grizzlies Split with Yreka During a recent trip to Yreka, California, the Ashland basc ballers split victories in non conference bouts with the Miners. The Yreka club won the seven inning first game 3 to 2, and the Grizzlies won the five-frame final 8 to 4. Yreka was able to dominate the first game by scoring two runs resulting from a base on balls, a fielder's option, a dropped fly ball in center field, and a single by Hitchcock. The other Miner run was scored in the third frame. Ashland scored one run in the fourth and another in the fifth inning. Dean Samuclson made the first run and Bob King, the sec ond, after back to back doubles by Bob King and Larry Pierce. Second Game In the first inning of the second game, Ashland came alive when Larry Pierce doubled. Rick Hester singled, and Bob King blasted one out of the park. The Grizzlies collected two runs in the second inning and two more in the fourth, for added in surance to win 8 to 4. Ashland Nicks GP Cavemen Ashland moved back into second place in conference standings by trimming the Cavemen in a game that lasted 12 innings. The Grizzlies are now in a second place tie with the Klamath Pelicans, because of the 4 to 3 win over Grants Pass. Ashland clinched the scoring in the top of the 12th inning when Rick Callahan got on base on an error and was driven home by Rick Pierce. Rick Hester scored the first run in the first inning when he singled and was brought in on a GP error, but in the third inning. Grants Pass went ahead 3 to 1. Then Ashland tied the game in the top of the sixth. Both Ashland and Klamath have four wins and two losses. Next week Ashland ends their season when they play Medford Friday and Klamath Saturday. If Ashland wins both games they will be assured of a tie for first place. If Ashland and Medford tie, there will be a special play-off game. In track, Ashland completed the season by losing to Grants Pass. Next Saturday they go to the dis trict meet at Klamath Falls. The tennis team also ended their regular conference play and went to district a week ago. Ken Stevenson and Ken Mitchell took second in doubles at the district meet and will now go on to compete in the state tournament. In JV baseball, the only JV spring sport, Ashland has beaten Medford and Crater each twice, lost twice to Klamath, Grants Pass, and Crater. Several JV players have also been playing in the second games of the varsity doubleheaders. They end their season the same time the varsity does when they play Klamath here next Saturday. The Grizzlies placed firsts in seven of the 14 events anf swept the discus, while SM took six firsts and tied for another first. Paul Elliott of St. Mary's won both hurdle events and tsed for first in the high jump with Jim Lamb of Ashland. The Crusaders also won the relay, but were dis qualified for an out-of-zonf baton pass. Ashland Winners Ron Boyce won the 100 in 10.8, Gary Wallace, the 220 in 23.6, and Ron Kirscher took the 880 in 2:08.3. In the field event i, Jack Mills put the shot 43.3 feet. Lamb and Elliot tied in the high jump Rodd'n with Robert Again Darrell Plankenhorn has made the car column, but this time not with a '35 Dodge. Dan-ell is now the proud owner of a 1953 two-door hardtop Ford Skyliner. It is a solid white color on the outside, and has a black and white interior. This car is completely custom, with Don Wolff doing the designing and work. The car is completely leaded in on the outside, has black and white naugahyde tuck-and-roll up holstery, electric doors, windows, and seats, has power steering, dual pipes, and has a tinted glass roof. It is powered by a 1955 Mercury mill, and is geared by three speeds on the column. Un derneath, the car rolls along on 7:60 x 15 tires. at 5-7, Jeff Baker and Dan Lewis, both of Ashland, tied in the pole vault at 11 feet, and Dan Dixon won the discus with a heave of 127-1 Vh feet.
