Rick Tierce takes a mighty suing at the ball in game against Medford Ashland Trims jMedford Tornado Crater Comets jOuthits Grizzlies Banquet Honors Basketball Team Howard Pierce conducted the Kiwanians banquet that was pres ented in honor of the Ashland High basketball team. The banquet was held in the Junior High School cafeteria Wed nesday evening. April 11, Guest speakers of the evening were John Lewis, head basketball coach at Willamette University, and his assistant. Norm Chapp- man. Letters and trophies were presented to the players, and the players presented Coach Kiel with a sport Shirt. Lynn Merri man received trophies for the most rebounds and the most in spirational player. Larry Pierce received the trophy for scoring the most points Ashland trompod Crater 6-1 Friday in a tennis match held at Ashland. Taylor and Mitchell, 6 3, 6-3. - Western Auto Your Home Owned Store Coiner Pioneer & Main Ashland, Oregon In the second game between the Medford Tornado and the Ashland Grizzlies, the Tornado team evened the score by beating the Grizzlies 10 to 8 as to a 2 to 0 defeat by the Grizzlies a week earlier. Medford's biggest inning was the third when six runs crossed th;- olate. Craig Laurance. Gary Miller, Dick Deffley, Stuart Young, and Dan Miles all hit singles. Wayne Couch, who got on base on an error, scored when he and Deffley pulled off a double steal. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Tornado had a lead of 10 to 4. but the pitching went wild and the Grizzlies scored four more runs. Two Ashlanders drew gift walks and Kick Pierce got an infield hit then Larry Pierce knocked a grand slam homer over the 377 foot mark in center field with only one out. However the next two batters were retired. : COMING SPORTS EVENTS AHS DEFEATS CRATER 6-1 IN TENNIS MEET Ashland High tied the Southern Oregon conference league stand ings by defeating the Crater Comets 7 to 4. Ashland is tied with Medford with a record of two wins and no losses. Bob King. Ashland pitcher, allowed the Comets only six hits, six bases on balls, and struck out 11 batters. Dean Samuelson and Larry Pierce led the Ashland batting with two hits at two times at bat for Samuelson and a ground rule double for Pierce. Mike Glines and Pat Pepper were the leading batters for Crater. The Grizzlies left 14 men stranded on the bases, while the Comets left only seven. Ashland combined its scores into three innings, scoring three runs in the fourth, while Crater gained their runs in separate innings. 1 4 LeRoy Magruger, Jeff Trost, and Mike Cotton, Ashland High School track team members, run the 330.
