FRL, APRIL 20, 1962 ROGUE NEWS PAGE THREE Hans Christian Andersen Celebrates Birthday This month we celebrate the birthday of a man. who, because of his wildly imaginative nature, leaped from unknown poverty to immortality. His name: Hans Christian Andersen. On April 2. 1805 one of the best-loved writers of children's stories was born in the Danish town of Odense. The son of a sickly, impoverished shoemaker, Andersen at an early age gave signs of an exceptionally sensitive and imaginative nature. After his father's death the 11 year-old boy went to Copenhagen where he tried unsuccessfully to become an actor. There he finally found in fluential friends who generously helped him obtain an education. These friends also supported him when he began writing. At the age of 23 he attracted attention by his poem "The Dying Child" and some minor prose works. His writings were well received, but for a while he was ridiculed be cause of his mannerisms, his vanity and his careless style. This attitutdc changed to one of admiration when Andersen, after a trip to Italy, published his novel. "Improvisatore," and his first volume of "Kairy Tales for Children." It is on his fairy talcs that Andersen's world fame rests, and many of these have been translated into several languages. These tales, full of humor, imagination, and a charm ing simplicity, included The Kir Tree, The Ugly Duckling, The Tin Soldier. The Snow Queen, and The Red Shoes. The unique quality of his fairy tales derives from the author's ability to make inanimate things live, breathe, and speak and to create an imaginary world which, to any child is more fascinating than reality. These tales charm the adult as completely as they do the child, for there is in many of them a definite view of life and a measure of social philosophy. Also, in these stories, there is a profound sympathy with, and understanding of, those who have known frustration, suffering and disappointment. Andersen traveled abroad in cessantly and formed a wide circle of friends, among whom were kings, writers and especially the English novelist, Charles Dickens. He lieved to see the fulfillment of a prophecy made by an old woman on the eve of his first departure from Odense to Copen hagen, that some day his native city would be illuminated in his honor. Andersen died on August 4, ,1875. SPRING SPORT SUPPLIES EBERHART'S 1156 lliway 66 GATEWAY SHOPPING CENTER Ashland Rexall Drug Cosmetics Prescriptions School Supplies 275 E. Ten members of the club left the school at 7:45 for the mountains arriving home about 5 o'clock with little worse than a few stiff muscles and beet-red faces. According to Janic Clark, the weather had been hot and sunny but the sking conditions were bad as the snow in many places had begun to melt. Yvonue Nicolson remarked that she had spent most of the time either trying to extricate her self from the snowbanks into which she hads skied head-first, or getting herself and hed skies disentangled after a wild, uncon trolled fall. Most Ashland High School students would answer, "yes." The reason for the stench is that Mr. John Barlow's chemistry classes have been experimenting with esters. Esters are chemical combinat ions of an alcohol and an acid. The students mixed these with other chemicals and heated them a very little. Several students found that if the mixture is heated too much, it blows up. The object of the experiment was to produce artificial flavors. Some of the flavors created were: apple, banana, pineapple, and mint. Ben Franklin Store FOR YOUR VARIETY AND SCHOOL NEEDS 250 E.
