MINSTREL SHOW TONIGHT! AHS Presents Minstrels Tonight and Saturday Strains of "Swanee . . . How I love ya! How I love ya! My dear old Swanee!" have been echoeing throughout the gymnasium in the last four weeks as the student and faculty of Ashland High School have been rehearsing for the first Minstrel Show, to be presented tonight and Saturday night. Under the direction of Mr. Bernard Windt. Ashland High School's orchestra and chorus director, the Minstrel Show will include lively musical numbers, dancing, and the antics of the traditional "blackfaces." Opening with tha "Land of Cot ton" overture, the show boasts such songs as "Nellie Was a Lady," "Ring de Banjo," "When the Saints Go Marchin' In," and "I Found a Million Dollar Baby in a Five and Ten-Cent Store." In between the musical numbers, the blackface end-men & women, will carry on with humorous dialogue sequences. Drama Club Presents Play "I look like a rosy rosebud, or something," remarked Lee Marks as he squinted at his powder- and rouge-plastered face reflected in the mirror. The curtain was about to rise on the Drama Club Play, "Make Room for Rodney." held on Monday, March S for the stu dent body in the cafeteria. The comedy, which lasted from 12:55 to 1:55, was introduced by Galen Roberson, and told how Rodney Lodge tried to get his sister, Phyllis Lodge married so that he could have her bedroom as his own room. The cast consisted of Lee Marks, as Rodney Lodge; Claudia Ever ett, as Phyllis Lodge; Judy Ben son,, as Mrs. Lodge; Dick Bush nell, as Mr. Lodge; Francis Hol mes, as the maid; Suzanne Har mon, as Josephine; Carl Stubble field, as Bill Thompson; and Jerry Guscette, as Lyman Cunningham. Earl Iba was the Stage Manager. Judy Benson stepped in at the last minute to take the part of Mrs. Lodge as Peggy Vance, who had been originally cast as Mrs. Lodge, was ill. 'Blackfaces" will consist of Judy Benson, Ron Bemis, Keith Brostad, Chuck Calhoun, Gloria Collver, Janet Covington, Judy Ebcrhart, Bob Ford, Linda Hugh es, Angie Downy, Rick Miller, Jack Mills, Karen Schopf, Dave Squires, Marion Parker, and Tom Thompson. Serving as Master of Ceremon ies will be "Mr. Interlocuter." Playing him on Friday night is Rick Callahan, and Saturday night will be Charles Hillestad. Publicity Given For publicity purposes, the Blackfaces, Mr. Interlocuter, and a band traveled through town on the back of a flat-bed trailer this week. Blackfaces also appeared on television. Ticket sales have been placed on a competitive basis, with S.S.S. Day points being given to the class that sells the most. Math Students Enter Contest On March 8 at Ashland High School an 80 minute mathematics contest was held at sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America and the Society of Act uaries. This was the thirteenth annual mathematics contest of its type to be distributed among the schools. For Ashland High the winning team consisted of Dave Squire, Ron Kirsher and Jim Lamb. Their scores will now be entered into state competition. As high scorer for Ashland High School Dave Squire will receive a pin signifying his achievement and the winning school will also be given an award. TRI-HI-Y PLANS CONVENTION On April 26, five students from the Ashland Tri-Hi-Y will attend a state convention in Salem. Those attending will be Gen Rodgers as chaplain, Linda WelLs as a senator and Carolyn Harmon as a representative. Also attend ing as observers are Darlene Cle ments and Sharon Lantis. While at this convention, the senator and representative will present a bill which states that all dependent or delinquent child ren in the juvenile home should get an education. The members onf Tri-Hi-Y along with their legal consulant worked out this bill and presented it at the district meet held in February. Six Bands Hold Annual Festival Three hundred and fifty stu dents participated in the annual band festival held March 8, at 7:30 in the high school gym nasium. Bands performing were: the Ashland Senior High School Band; the Ashland Junior High School Varsity and Cadet Bands; and the fifth and sixth grade bands. According to Rick Hester, high school band president, there was a very good attendance at the festival. Coming Soon! The Oregon Symphonic Band from the University of Oregon will play at the Ashland Junior High School at 7:30 on April 3. National Honor Society Holds Annual Induction Eight seniors and seventeen juniors were inducted into the Alpha Chapter of the National Honor Society in a ceremony held March 22, at 2:30 p.m. before the entire student body. These stu dents were chosen on the basis of their outstanding achievments in character, leadership, scholarship, and service. All students inducted must meet the specifications of the National Honor Society Head quarters, Washington, D.C. The upper fitieen per cent of the senior class is eligible for membership. Ten per cent were eligible for membership when juniors. The next five per cent are Farley Buell, Richard Byrns, Janet Bobbett, Joy Farenhurst, Ron Kirsher, Wesley Nickodemus, Yvonne Nicolson, and David Squires. The upper ten per cent of the junior class meeting the require ments for NHS membership in clude Carol Bjork, Charles Cal houn, Linda Decker, Claudia Everett, Nancy Grow, Carolyn Harmon, Jane Hennick, Tod Hess, Carol James, Jim Lamb, Betty Martin, Elaine Meads, Terry Mc Kinnis, Craig Pennington, Paula Prescott, James S. Smith, and Doree Woodell. Seniors inducted into the NHS 1961 include Judy Benson, Nancy Conrad, Joan Drager, Linda Gray, Karen Hinrichs, Janet Mil ler, Margie Moore, Sue Mittag, Dan Lewis, Judy Eberhart, Janet Covington, Karen Schopf, Peggy Parsons, Joy Hinkson, Ken Steven son, Susan Thompson, and Delores Westgaard. Officers of the Alpha Chapter are Ken Stevenson, president; Karen Hinrichs, vice-president; Peggy Parsons, secretary, and Joy Hinkson, treasurer. Advisors are Miss Mary McLarnen and Mrs. Estel Schler. The program consisted of speeches by Ken Stevenson, Mr. Gaylord Smith, Dr. Betty Lou Dunlop, Janet Miller, Judy Eber hart, Karen Schopf, and Peggy Parsons.
