PAGE FOUR ROGUE NEWS FRI., DEC 1, 1961 George Keil Coaches Team Mr. George J. Keil is the new head basketball coach at Ashland this year. He is taking the place of Mr. Earl Iba who has been head basketball coach at Ashland High for several years. Coach Keil received his educat ion at the University of Utah, University of Idaho, and at Idaho State College where he received his B.S. in education. Mr. Keil and wife, Klaudine, have two daughters: Jorja Dawn, 13. and Kris De, 10. He has also served two years in the 7th Div ision of the army. In the re creation field, Mr. Keil enjoys out door sport. Before coming to coach at Ash land. Mr. Keil had taught and coached at various other schools. He taught and coached one year at Kimberly High School, three years at American Falls High School, one year at Ontario High School, and five years at Tampa High School. Coaching records at these schools are respectively 20 wins and 11 losses and State Champions; 41 wins and 19 losses; 22 wins and 3 losses being runner-ups in Class A-2 Tournament; and 72 wins, 52 losses receiving District 2 Champions and District 1 runncr-up. He has coached his teams to an excellent record by having one regional runner-up and other teams placing fourth, fifth, eight, and ninth in state tournaments. Main S & H Green Stamps Weight Program At Ashland High The new weight training coach at Ashland High School is Mr. Warren Dale Brenning. Mr. Bren ning is 36 years old, married, and has 5 children (Joyanne, Julie, Jodie, John, and Jana). Mr. Brenning has gone to several different colleges. They are; Hasting College, Lewis & Clark, and Williamette University. Mr. Brenning was a major in Juvenile Delinquency. Mr. Brenning spent 32 months in the armed forces (navy). He was a medical corpsman. He has many hobbies of which sports seems to be his favorite. He also likes to sing Christian Gospel music for his church. Mr. Brenning has been a very active man throughout his life as he participated in football, basket ball, and track in his college years. He was also on the boxing team. One of his greater achiev- ments in life has been winning the Golden Gloves Boxing Cham pionships in Minors and Nebraska Mr. Brenning coached weight training and boxing at the Wash ington State Training School for Boys for two years. He also coached at the Knots Street Com munity Center in Portland. Here he coached a boy to the Pacific Coast Weight Lifting Champion ship. The boy also went on to win the Canadian Northwest title in Canada. He was voted outstand ing lifter at this tournament. He coached three other boys to Ore gon Weight Lifting Champion ships and his Knots Street team won the team championship also. Mr. Brenning's next position was assistant coach of a boxing team that won twenty-two Pacific Coast Titles in six months. The team also had two National Champions, and the outstanding boxer in the nation. The team brought home the Boxing As sociation team trophy that year, which is the first time Oregon has ever won it. AHS Band Travels To San Francisco Ashland High School's Band traveled to the University of California to attend their Band Day on November 17 through November 19. One hundred bands participated in the University of California vs. University of Kansas half-time show. Leaving at 9:30 p.m., Friday, November 17, the band traveled all night by Greyhound bus. Mr. Mobley, head wrestling coach, stated that 35 to 40 boys have signed up for wrestling this year. Out of this group of boys only four are returning lettermen. They are Jeff Baker, Gene Harth, Jack Mills and Ken Mitchel. Approximately twelve lettermen were lost because of graduation last spring. Taking the place of Mr. Stan Smith as assistant wrestling coach is Mr. Al Knutson, Ashland High's new football coach. On December 8, the team will meet with Medford at Medford for their first match of the year. The first event on the home schedule will occur December 14, at 7:00 p.m., when Ashland meets Glendale. In addition to equipment al ready in use by the wrestling squad a new mat totaling $2300 was purchased to be used starting this year. Mr. Mobley also commented that they would like to see as much student support of these events as possible. After changing into their uniforms, they practiced with the other bands. After lunch the bands paraded to the game. The theme of the half-time show was "Ben-Hur." University of Kansas won the foot ball game, 53-7. Saterday evening most of the band members went to Playland or walked around San Francisco. Sunday morning was spent sight seeing at Fleischaker Zoo. The buses went across the Golden Gate Bridfge. Traveling all night the band arrived home at one o'clock in the morning. Cross Country Rates Second Ashland came in second in the district meet held in Klamath Falls, Oregon, on November 3, 1961. Grants Pass was first, Med ford third. Crater fourth, and Klamath Falls fifth. Gerald Brown came in third. Don Way fourth, Farley Buell twelfth, Gary Wallace sixteenth, and Tom Price seventeenth. Ashland therefore, qualified for the state meet, by placing second. Out of twenty-one teams, Ashland took seventeenth, with Don Way as our best finisher, who came in thirty-third out of two hundred and fifty boys running. The State Meet was held at Salem. Oregon at Willamette University. This seasons record for Cross Country is four wins and three losses.
