Loses One; Wins Two
The Ashland High School Grizzlies are hard at work against the
Yreka Miners. The game ended in a Grizzly victory.

Ashland Grizzlies
Mr. Alfred Knutson, from the
state of Washington, has replaced
Mr. Stan Smith as head football
coach at Ashland High School.
Mr. Knutson and his wife, Mrs.
Paula Knutson, have one child,
Shirley, who is two years old. He
has had two years of military ex
perience in the U.S. Army, and
attended the Army Information
School at Fort Slocum, New York.
He also was stationed for seven
teen months in Bamberg, Germany.
In June of 1955, he received
his B.A. in Education at Central
Washington College of Education.
Ellensburg. Washington. During
the years of 1959. I960, and 1961
he attended summer school, and
received his M.E. August 18, 1961,
at the same college. Also while
at Central Washington College he
was a center on the football team

girl? Do you enjoy sports and
ompetition? If the answer is
yes", then G.A.A. is for you.
G.A.A. is the Girls' Athletic
Association, sponsored by Miss
Shirley Laney, girls' P.E. teacher.
Membership is open to any sopho
more, junior, or senior girl who
is interested in spending an hour
a week playing a sport.
G.A.A. has already had three
meetings and the next meeting
will be Tuesday, October 17, in
the girls' locker room from 3 30
to 4:30.
In the first conference game of
the season, the Grizzlies were
undermined by the Klamath Falls
Pelicans by a score of 34-0, on
the Pels own fild.
During the week of September
18-21, the Grizzlies worked hard
perparing for the conference
game, but it proved to be not
enough. The fired-up Klamath ball
club took advantage of the Grizz
lies mistakes. Ashland lost four
fumbles and two passes to the
Pelicans, which they capitalized
on.
About half-way through the
first quarter, the Pelicans recov
ered a Grizzly fumble on the Ash
land 25 yard line. Dave Stippich
scored from 14 yards out, and the
extra point was added by John
Ruger.
In the second quarter, the Grizz
lies fumbled again. Klamath again
scored with Ken Lewis going 23
yards and Ruger kicking the
extra point, making the halftime
score 14-0.
In the third quarter, the Peli
cans sustained a 60yard drive
with Ken Hunsaker going around
left end for the score. Minutes
later, Paul Nolc intercepted an
Ashland pass. Shcrm Allen then
passed in the end zone to Grover
Dahn for another TD.
In the fourth and final quarter
ing around right end for the
score. Johnson's kick went wide
of the uprights; making the score
13-7.
Crater threatened twice to get
back into the ball game. Once in
the third quarter, the Comets
went midway into Grizzly terri
tory, but the Ashland defense
held.
The Comets went home with
their first defeat after the Griz
zlies had changed their offensive
line and formation under new
supervision.
MINERS FORFEIT
Although the Ashland-Yreka
game ended in a 20-20 tie, Ash
land was declared the winner by
default. Yreka was charged with
an illegal substitution by allow
ing an ejected player back into
the game. Yreka was forced to
forfeit the game to Ashland by a
2-0 score.
After recovering an Ashland
tumble, Yreka scored on a pass
from Dick Kinney to Silva in the
end zone, with Bob Laustalot
kicking the extra point.
Five minutes later, Yreka re
covered another Grizzly fumble
and marched 53 yards with Silva
scoring from two yards out. Again
Laustalot kicked the extra point

In the first game of a two
game series, the Ashland Grizzlies
handed the Crater Comets their
first defeat.
Under the guidence of Assistant
Coach John Gray, in the absence
of Head Coach Alfred Knutson,
the Grizzlies downed Crater by a
13-7 score.
With the. game less than three
I minutes old, the Comets posted

Ashland punt and ran 60 yards
to the end zone, with the extra
point also being added.
In the second quarter, Ashland
received the ball, after a punt
exchange, on their own 34 yard
line. Sustaining a drive of 66
yards, Ron Scholar scored from
four yards out. Howard Johnson,
putting his toe to good use,
evened the score at 7-7 by kick
ing the extra point. On the kick
off. after the Ashland score, Jack
Mills grabbed a Mike Glines
fumble. With the ball on the
Crater 37 yard line, the Grizzlies
again drove for the goal line
The drive was ended with Tom
Logue, Grizzly quarterback, go
first drive on their own 25 yard
line. Sustaining a drive of 75
yards, found Ron Scholer going
over for the first Ashland TD.
Johnson kicked the extra point
making the halftime score 147
in favor of the Miners.
As the result of a poor kick.
Ashland took over on the Yreka
33 yard line early in the third
quarter. Runs by Scholer, Calla
han, and King, with King going
over, gave the Grizzlies their sec
ond TD. The all important extra
point was missed by Johnson.
Early in the fourth quarter.
the Grizzlies again fumbled and
Yreka recovered on the Ashland
13 yard line. Yreka scored but the
extra point attempt was blocked
by Ron Kirsher.
Ashland took the kick, and af
ter eleven offensive plays, the
Grizzlies scored on a pass from
Johnson to Callahan. Johnson
tied the score at 20 20 when he
kicked the extra point.
With time running out. Jack
Mills recovered a Yreka fumble
on the Miner 44 yard line. Ash
land moved the ball to the 30
yard line. All attempts failed for
I the Grizzlies as time ran out.
