Band News Notes
By Mr. Maddox .
The Ashland High School Band
is in the midst of its most strenu
ous season football season. The
band has performed for the Phoe
nix and Shasta games and will
perform for the Crater and Grants
Pass games. The junior high band
will perform for the Yreka game
on October 6.
Half-time themes have been
"Sports Calendar," and "Enter
tainment U. S. A." Ones to look
for are "Mexican Holiday" and
"Salute to the Grads."
This year 45 students have re
gistered for band with the balance
of instrumentation quite good. We
are lacking a bassoon player and
are short on trombone players.
All other sections arc up to
strength. The largest class is the
sophomores.
We have a new crew of major
ettes this season that show a lot
of promise and are working very
hard.
Headed by Linda Weber, they
include Paula Prescott, Bonnie
Polk. Dorothy Gardner, and Janice
Torrey.

Two new coaches fo rthe Ash
land High Grizzlies have acquired
approximately 50 players to make
up this year's team. After two
successful games with the Phoe
nix Pirates and the Shasta Wolves,
the Ashland Grizzlies are travel
ing to Klamath Falls for tonight's
game.
First Win
During the season opener, the
Grizzlies posted a win over the
Phoenix Pirates by a score of 13
to 0. Starting off for the home
team were: Ron Kirsher, left end;
Galen Robers' n, left tackle; Jack
Mills, left guard; Dale Peterson,
center; Bob Ford, right guard;
John Polk, right tackle; Gale Tep
pcr, right end; Ruk Callahan,
right half; Ron Scholer, fullback;
Bob King, left half; and Tom
Logue, quarterback.
Phoenix coach. Jack Woodward,
had a squad of 30 members, 12 of
which are lettermen. Phoenix let-
termen are: Gary Colfax, Mike
Consbruek, Harry Gay, Rlaph Guy-
sin, Terry Hanson, Rick Seymour,
Fred Tyckson. Juniors include:
Dave Johnson, Tim O'Mara, and
Rick Richey. Sophomores are:
John Brandby and Dave Wcstfall.
During the defensive battle the
Ashlanders managed to score
twice in the fourth quarter. Ron
Scholer bounded over from four
yards out for the first tally. The
extra point was missed by John
son. After a mix-up in signals
Logue romped from two yards out
around left end for the second
TD. Johnson kicked the extra
point.
Second Clash
During the second game of the
season the home team was looking
for another win. The battle, a de
fensively played game, ended in
a 0 to 0 score.
The Ashlanders, with somewhat
of a lighter squad, started with an
all senior 11 first siring. The
heavier Wolves proved to be a
powerful club, but were crippled
by penalties.
Butch McCarthy, a transfer
from Yreka. was a leading ground
gainer for the Wolves but could
n't reach paydirt. In the third
quarter the Grizzlies sustained a
drive down to the Wolves 2 yard
line before they were forced to
give up the ball.
In the closing minutes of the
game, the Grizzlies failed to pick
up enough yardage on a fourth
down gamble and the Wolves took
over. Starting on the Grizzlies
46 yard line, the Wolves started
their drive. They advanced to the
Ashlanders 20 yard line before
time ran out.
Tonight's Game
Ashland's team meets the Klam
ath Falls Pelicans in the first con
ference clash of the season to
night at Klamath. The Pelicans
won their first game of the sea
son over Marshfield by a 14 to 6
margin. In the second game of the
year 6th ranked North Salem edg
ed 5th ranked Klamath Falls by
a 13 to 12 score. Because of last
year's victory there are many
opinions about the outcome of
tonight's game.
Players report that they are
training vigorously in prepara
tion for tonight's game.
