The Ashland High School Band is in the midst of its most strenu ous season football season. The band has performed for the Phoe nix and Shasta games and will perform for the Crater and Grants Pass games. The junior high band will perform for the Yreka game on October 6. Half-time themes have been "Sports Calendar," and "Enter tainment U. S. A." Ones to look for are "Mexican Holiday" and "Salute to the Grads." This year 45 students have re gistered for band with the balance of instrumentation quite good. We are lacking a bassoon player and are short on trombone players. All other sections arc up to strength. The largest class is the sophomores. We have a new crew of major ettes this season that show a lot of promise and are working very hard. Headed by Linda Weber, they include Paula Prescott, Bonnie Polk. Dorothy Gardner, and Janice Torrey. After two successful games with the Phoe nix Pirates and the Shasta Wolves, the Ashland Grizzlies are travel ing to Klamath Falls for tonight's game. First Win During the season opener, the Grizzlies posted a win over the Phoenix Pirates by a score of 13 to 0. Starting off for the home team were: Ron Kirsher, left end; Galen Robers' n, left tackle; Jack Mills, left guard; Dale Peterson, center; Bob Ford, right guard; John Polk, right tackle; Gale Tep pcr, right end; Ruk Callahan, right half; Ron Scholer, fullback; Bob King, left half; and Tom Logue, quarterback. Phoenix coach. Jack Woodward, had a squad of 30 members, 12 of which are lettermen. Phoenix let- termen are: Gary Colfax, Mike Consbruek, Harry Gay, Rlaph Guy- sin, Terry Hanson, Rick Seymour, Fred Tyckson. Juniors include: Dave Johnson, Tim O'Mara, and Rick Richey. Sophomores are: John Brandby and Dave Wcstfall. During the defensive battle the Ashlanders managed to score twice in the fourth quarter. Ron Scholer bounded over from four yards out for the first tally. The extra point was missed by John son. After a mix-up in signals Logue romped from two yards out around left end for the second TD. Johnson kicked the extra point. Second Clash During the second game of the season the home team was looking for another win. The battle, a de fensively played game, ended in a 0 to 0 score. The Ashlanders, with somewhat of a lighter squad, started with an all senior 11 first siring. The heavier Wolves proved to be a powerful club, but were crippled by penalties. Butch McCarthy, a transfer from Yreka. was a leading ground gainer for the Wolves but could n't reach paydirt. In the third quarter the Grizzlies sustained a drive down to the Wolves 2 yard line before they were forced to give up the ball. In the closing minutes of the game, the Grizzlies failed to pick up enough yardage on a fourth down gamble and the Wolves took over. Starting on the Grizzlies 46 yard line, the Wolves started their drive. They advanced to the Ashlanders 20 yard line before time ran out. Tonight's Game Ashland's team meets the Klam ath Falls Pelicans in the first con ference clash of the season to night at Klamath. The Pelicans won their first game of the sea son over Marshfield by a 14 to 6 margin. In the second game of the year 6th ranked North Salem edg ed 5th ranked Klamath Falls by a 13 to 12 score. Because of last year's victory there are many opinions about the outcome of tonight's game. Players report that they are training vigorously in prepara tion for tonight's game.
