Building Changes
Throughout Years
During the summer of 1889,
the first Ashland High School
was organized. It was only the
second high school in the state.
Since that time, many building
renovations have taken place,
making Ashland High School's
history a long and fascinating
one.
The first high school classes
were held in the upper part of
the North School, which also
served as grade school and jun
ior high school. The high school
classes were later moved to the
Academy building, located on
North Main.
Until the year 1911, the
Washington Building served as
the high school. The high
.school classes were alloted
three recitation rooms, and an
assembly room which seated
140 students.
In 1911, the first independent

which was the basis for our
present building. Since that
time, the enrollment has almost
doubled, and several new addi
lions have been added.
In 1953, a new wing was add
ed to the building. It consisted
of the present rooms of Mr,
Johnson, Mr. Lewis, the libra
ry, and the home economics
room. Before this time, the li
brary had been located in the
back portion of the study hall,
and the home economics room
was located in the present art
room.
In 1953, a new gymnasium
was also added to Ashland High
School, thus permitting the
Ashland High School basket
ball team to play home games
at their own school. Previously,
all games were played at the
old junior high or in the pre
sent cafeteria.
Several inside renovations
have also been made. The cur
rent typing room, bookkeeping
room, student body office and
study hall were once one large
assembly hall. The math rooms,
20 A and 2 IB were once one
large band room.
In this manner, the face of
Ashland High School has chang
ed throughout the years.
ASHLAND RATES HIGH
IN ACADEMIC HONORS
Ashland High School's his
tory has been sparked by num
erous academic achievements,
such as state chemistry, debate,
and typing championships.
In 1912, Ashland won the
slate debate championship. This
was the first year of competi
tive debate in Ashland High.
Nine years later, at an Oregon
State College meet, Ashland
was awarded first place in the
state typing contest. This hon
or was also won in 1925 and
1926.
From 1925 to 1928, for four
consecutive years, Ashland cop
ped the state debating champ
ionship. This honor has also
ben won in more recent years.
A contest involving chemis
try was won by Ashland High
School science students in
1930.

Against Fads
Boys! Have you ever been
annoyed because of sack dress

ed Ashland High School in
1924, when the male popula
tion really had something to
complain about, for all of the
girls were abandoning their
beautiful, feminine tresses in
favor of the new stylish "bobs."
And complain they did. The fol

this dangerous fad:
"Bobbed hair is immoral! It
is causing refined pupils to de
grade themselves! At the rate
which new heads are being cut,
by the time our children are
grandfathers, two-thirds of the
population will have bobbed
hair! Think of it! If the people
could just put their minds on
it, they could see what results
it would bring to our country,
and put a stop to it. It is up
to you. Do you want your girl
to have NO HAIR? Then see
that a stop is put to this fool

Well, how about it boys?

Glorious Sport's Past
Ashland beats Medford 96-0!
Don't believe it? It happened
for the first and last time way
back in 1899, and Ashland's
first football team was plowing
its way to a ictory. So begins
the first chapter in the story
of Ashland High School's sports
parade .
This is not the only glory in
this story, however; throughout
the years Ashland athletic
teams have garnered numerous
state and district champion
ships. For three consecutive years,
1913, 1914, and 1915. the Griz
zlies captured the ogue Valley
Championship, and for this feat
were awarded . the Kentner
Cup, which is displayed in the
trophy case in the gymnasium.
Ashland has also been award

The first was obtained in 1921,
when the Grizzlies won the
state . football championship.
One year later, in 1922, Ash
