Building Changes Throughout Years During the summer of 1889, the first Ashland High School was organized. It was only the second high school in the state. Since that time, many building renovations have taken place, making Ashland High School's history a long and fascinating one. The first high school classes were held in the upper part of the North School, which also served as grade school and jun ior high school. The high school classes were later moved to the Academy building, located on North Main. Until the year 1911, the Washington Building served as the high school. The high .school classes were alloted three recitation rooms, and an assembly room which seated 140 students. In 1911, the first independent Did1 You Know! Just before the turn of the century (when Ashland High was beating Medford) Ashland students were entertained by the Ringling Brothers and Bar num and Bailey Circus? When basketball was first played in Ashland, it was con sidered a sport for women? The first graduating class of AHS had three members. Ashland High School was built. which was the basis for our present building. Since that time, the enrollment has almost doubled, and several new addi lions have been added. In 1953, a new wing was add ed to the building. It consisted of the present rooms of Mr, Johnson, Mr. Lewis, the libra ry, and the home economics room. Before this time, the li brary had been located in the back portion of the study hall, and the home economics room was located in the present art room. In 1953, a new gymnasium was also added to Ashland High School, thus permitting the Ashland High School basket ball team to play home games at their own school. Previously, all games were played at the old junior high or in the pre sent cafeteria. Several inside renovations have also been made. The cur rent typing room, bookkeeping room, student body office and study hall were once one large assembly hall. The math rooms, 20 A and 2 IB were once one large band room. In this manner, the face of Ashland High School has chang ed throughout the years. ASHLAND RATES HIGH IN ACADEMIC HONORS Ashland High School's his tory has been sparked by num erous academic achievements, such as state chemistry, debate, and typing championships. In 1912, Ashland won the slate debate championship. This was the first year of competi tive debate in Ashland High. Nine years later, at an Oregon State College meet, Ashland was awarded first place in the state typing contest. This hon or was also won in 1925 and 1926. From 1925 to 1928, for four consecutive years, Ashland cop ped the state debating champ ionship. This honor has also ben won in more recent years. A contest involving chemis try was won by Ashland High School science students in 1930. 4. 5. 6. You should have attend ed Ashland High School in 1924, when the male popula tion really had something to complain about, for all of the girls were abandoning their beautiful, feminine tresses in favor of the new stylish "bobs." And complain they did. The fol lowing is aa excerpt fr,oni the Rogue News, December 15, 1924. a formal protest against this dangerous fad: "Bobbed hair is immoral! It is causing refined pupils to de grade themselves! At the rate which new heads are being cut, by the time our children are grandfathers, two-thirds of the population will have bobbed hair! Think of it! If the people could just put their minds on it, they could see what results it would bring to our country, and put a stop to it. It is up to you. Do you want your girl to have NO HAIR? Investigations Show Glorious Sport's Past Ashland beats Medford 96-0! Don't believe it? It happened for the first and last time way back in 1899, and Ashland's first football team was plowing its way to a ictory. So begins the first chapter in the story of Ashland High School's sports parade . This is not the only glory in this story, however; throughout the years Ashland athletic teams have garnered numerous state and district champion ships. For three consecutive years, 1913, 1914, and 1915. the Griz zlies captured the ogue Valley Championship, and for this feat were awarded . the Kentner Cup, which is displayed in the trophy case in the gymnasium. Ashland has also been award ed several state championships. The first was obtained in 1921, when the Grizzlies won the state . football championship. One year later, in 1922, Ash land gained top notch position in the state basketball tourna- JOKES 1920 VINTAGE Girl Jimmie is developing into quite a speed maniac. Another state champion ship was not won until 1944, when the Ashland Grizzlies were once more ranked first in the state basketball tourney. Through these years, Ash land has had the honor of plac ing many athletes upon the all state basketball and football teams. Fourteen Ashland cag ers have been named to all state teams, and several others to the fotball teams. The most recent addition to the all-state football teams have been Geor ge Moses, in 1959, and Bob Voris, in 1960. The Hayward elays, one of the most important of the state wide track meets, have attract ed many Ashland champions.
