PAGE FOUR ROGUE NEWS FRI.. DEC. IS. 1960 Parents Visit Ashland High Many lost parents were wandering through the halls of Ashland High School on Tues day evening, November 7. It was the annual "Back to School Night" held to dnform the parents on their children's progress at school. Entertainment for the even ing was provided by the chorus and the orchestra which are un der the direction of Mr. Ber nard Windt. Among others, the chorus sang: "I Enjoy Being a Girl." "Mary and Martha," and CBali Hi." The orchestra's num bers were: "Tango Lullaby," "South Pacific," and "Huckle berry Finn." Following their children's schedules, the parents went from class to class. They stay ed 9 minutes in each class and the teachers explained what , the class was doing. The evening ended with re freshments in the library. MERIT SCHOLARSHIP The seventh annual program starts with the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which is to be given on Tues day, March 7, or Saturday, March 11, 1961. Students who plan to grad uate in 1961 and enter college the same year are eligible for the scholarship. The game, played before a small but spir ited group of spectators, was Ashland's fourth consecutive loss of the season. Shasta was in control all the way, but it was evident from the beginning that Ashland was better organized team than they were during their previ ous overwhelming loss to the Wolves. After establishing a 12-9 edge at the end of the first quarter, Shasta pulled out to a six point lead, 27-21, at half time. The second half was compar atively close as the Grizzlies fought to stay within reach of the California team. However, the Wolves were too much for them to handle and the game ended 51t?ft7The margin of de feat was 10 points as compared to 30 the night before. Steve Carlton again was the big man for Shasta, scoring 23 points. John Mott paced Ash land with 13 on the strength of some fine second half shooting. Dave Col well, making his first varsity start for the Grizzlies, dumped in 10. In the first game of the even ing, the junior varsity came back from a one point deficit at halftime to grab a 31-26 vic tory and continue undefeated. In Friday night's game at Eureka the Loggers downed the Grizzlies by a 59-38 score. Taking over at the begin ning. Eureka raced to a 31-7 lead in the second quarter. The halftime score stood at 32-14 and the Loggers coasted from there. The second half was a closer battle as Ashland was outscor ed 27-24, making the final score 59-38. Fortuna picked up four points near the end of the sec ond quarter to gain a 20-17 margin at the halfway point, then came on strong in the sec ond half to take over. The Huskies' Jacobsen took high point honors for the game with 12, while Sid De Boer led Ashland with 11. The junior varsity fared much better than the varsity, coming out on top of both their enrauntera Thiv rfoffatri Fn- reka 36-20 and took Fortuna , 35-22. a Seniors Take Entrance Exams Seniors planning to attend a college which requires en trance examinations are taking the College Entrance Examina tion Board Tests. These tests are given by the College Schol arship Service. Medford is the testing center for our district. There are 550 colleges which require these tests. On December 3, both the ap titude tests and the achieve ment tests were given. Both tests will also be given March 18, 1961; May 20, 1961; and August 20, 1961. The apti tude tests only, will be given on January 14, 1961 and Feb ruary 4, 1961. The cost of the aptitude test is six dollars and the cost of the achievement test is four dollars. Ashland's offense never real ly got going against the tough California quintet. After Jerry Hauck put the Grizzlies into the lead 2-0 at the beginning of the game, Shasta began rolling and pulled away to a 15-5 lead by the time the first quarter ended. In the second period both teams scored eight points as Shasta, too, had their offensive troubles, and the first half end ed with the Wolves leading 23 13. The second half proved to be more of the same, except even i " ?T?ideL B ? nd ..f me uura me woives naa wia ened their lead to 38-22, and in the fourth quarter the Griz zlies' offense hit rock bottom. The Ashland club managed on ly two points on a couple of j free throws during the eight minute period as Shasta breez ed through the final portion of the game to the 54-24 victory. Steve Carlton came out of the game with 16 points to lead all scorers. Sid DeBoer tossed 10 for the Grizzlies, more than doubling the output of Ashland's second highest scor- In the jayvee game, Ashland had little trouble in racking up its third win after holding a 16-2 first quarter edge. Medford Tops AHS Malmen Wrestling season got under way at Ashland December 8, with the Medford squad defeat ing Ashland 35-13. Truman Vroman was the lone Ashlander to pin his op ponent, while Jeff Baker and Glen Moses gained decisions in their matches. Nelson Conner battled his opponent to a draw for Ashland's only other points. Preceding the varsity match es the Medford and Ashland junior varsities tangled for the second time in three dpys and the boys from Medford swamp ed Ashland 31-3. In their first meet on Decem ber 6, the Ashland jayvees were edged 30-27 by Medford.
