PAGE TWO ROGUE NEWS FRI.. DEC. 16. 1S60 The Christmas Spirit by Dan Wick We have heard complaints from some persons that Christmas has lost its beauty. That it has be come a time for the manufacturers, to exploit the con sumers; a time when people worry more about what's going to be under the Christmas tree than about He whose birth we are supposed to be celebrat ing. It may be true that a lot of profit is made from Christmas sales. It may be true that a lot of empha sis is put upon the giving and receiving of presents. But the true Christmas spirit is still there and holds dominion over all other factors and all other feelings. Christmas is still that time of year when all Americans go to their respective churches and wor ship together in their respective ways for the same objectives: "Peace on Earth and goodwill to all men." The spirit has not left us, nor will it ever leave us as long as men are free and may worship as they please. The Realization of Education By M. Woodell When we graduate, high school seems a matter of course; or rather, the work we have done doesn't seem like very much. We have spent much time get ting "educated" and now the future does not seem nearly so certain or secure. What we are doing of late i3 trying to get through the senior year as best we can and still have time to think about what we are going to do in the future. It is disturbing to have time creep up on us in this fashion, and slowly we slip from the warmth of high school, and cease to be a member of standing in our class. All of a sudden we realize that we won't be returning in September and whatever we say now will be regarded as either sentimental reminiscing or "sour grapes." As of now we have no standing in high school where we have spent four long, hard years. One step will take us into a world where we are expendable as just another one of the millions, an abstract statisti cal unit in the mundane business of raising families of children who will be faced with the same situa tions. It is assumed that when we leave the ivy walls, we will fall into a niche and be happy. We may fall but possibly not into a niche, and happiness is cer tainly not assured. We gripe, but we are finding out that our problems are not applicable only to us. Oth ers from the world over are faced with decisions of like nature and the same doubts are running through their minds. We are a few out of many. We are not so bad off as we make ourselves out to be. So what are we wor rying about? Let's live life as it happens, not worry ing about things before they come to pass. HELPFUL HINTS ON YOUR HOLIDAY APPEARANCE By Helena Rubinstein Note: Mme. Rubinstein is world-famous as the First Lady of Beauty Science. She has written this column espe cially for high school publi cations. The glitter of holiday lights . . . the fun of get-togethers with the crowd . . . the warmth and gaety of family gatherings . . . the hustle end bustle of Yuletide gifts . . . the excite ment of Christmas parties and proms . . . Part of it, too, the thrill of presenting a new you to the world ... in a new prom gown, perhaps; a special party wrap; silver slippers and sparkling white gloves; a corsage from that "certain someone' Measuring-up, beauty and fashion-wise, to the holiday season is part and parcel of your poise and self-confidence, your fun and good times. To often, though, holiday time can be problem time, well as fun time. One of these problems is your appearance particular ly, your complexion. Perhaps you've been annoyed (and just little bit worried) by some breakouts which have sprout ed during the past few months. In any case your worries are not yours alone, since complex ion problems take first place on the complaint list of high school students. Doctors tell us that an overwhelming 96 of teenagers BOTH FELLOWS AND GIRLS suffer from acne at some time during their high school days! But before you know what to do about it, it is important to understand what acne is . . . and what it is NOT. For centuries, acne has been hidden, the fog and shadow of ignorance, superstition and old wives' tales. Contrary to what many people believe, black heads and pimples are NOT dirt. Acne is not caused by dirt. Dating Analyzed OF YOUNG MARRIAGES By Sylvia Brostad Young marriages are becom- By Dan Parker ing more and more frequent In The art of daU is a u this modern age. They rush into marriage with a star ry-eyed look, only to be treat ed to a rude awakening when they discover that the honey moon is over. All of their young lives they have had no responsibilities; mother has al ways looked out for their every want and need. She has shel tered them from the cold, cruel world all this time, and when they get married they are not prepared for all the knocks and bumps that a family life gives them. Often the young bride does not know the fundamen tals of good housekeeping: cooking, sewing, and house- cleaning. This has always been left up to her mother. The young groom usually does not know the meaning of a fuU day's work. He has always got ten his money from his father, by a group of elderly females (married), in order to trap all enterprising, healthy, and oth erwise eligible males, into the pit of matrimony. The worst part of it is the fact, that some how, I regret to say, these men are even convinced or other wise brainwashed, into a state of mind which allows them to enjoy such a life. Alas, if we only knew the power of a wo man t ! In writing this paper, it is not my purpose to degrade dat ing as a whole; I only wish to point out emphatically, to the young men of the world, that, although it (dating) has many good points, one must constant ly be reminded of the many deep and hidden charms that lurk along its path. This must serve as a warning to all those and all of a sudden he has to , happy, carefree men who will, support a wife. Up to this time, these young parents have more or less regarded a baby as a little toy, something to look at but not to touch. They discover that a baby is a person with a mind of his own. At the same time, however, the parent grows with the child; growing older with him. So that by the time he is a teenager, his parents will not be so old that they cannot re member all of the fun and pleasures they had in their own youths. a Should High School Students Own Cars It is my personal opinion that the average high school nor' is it caused by early ro- student .is better off not owning mantic interest. I have many reasons for having this viewpoint but I will mention only a few. The first is that the average student would be forced to take at least a part-time job to support the many expenses of operating a car. The job itself would be a great benefit in experience for the student, but often it has a definite lowering effect upon his grades. Although there is no magic "cure-all" for adolescent acne, there are certain things which you can do on your own. As a starter, here are a few medical ly approved hints to help your self to a clearer, healthier skin. Such happenings would not be so deplorable if many of these victims had not been literally snatched out of the arms of one woman (his moth er), into the arms of another woman (his wife), before he has had the chance to show himself as a man. Even in view of these facts, I cannot produce a fool-proof safeguard. I can only come to one conclusion. If a man is to be free, he must consider dat ing in the same category as the other manly arts; such as bull fighting, fencing, soldiering, and so on. He must engage in it with the same knowledge of risks and a certain degree of " caution, and hope that he is lucky. a Merit Test To Be Given Examinations will be given to 54 registered Ashland High students wishing to enter the 1961-62 National Merit Scholar ship competition on March 7, 1961.
