PAGE FOUR ROGUE NEWS FRL. APRIL 26. 1137 GRIZZLY BRIEFS . . . The second annual Little Rogue relays were held on the Southern Oregon college oval April 6, instead of in Phoenix as it had been planned earlier. There were seven entires in the meet of A-2 & B schools. They included Eagle Point, Illi nois Valley, Glendale, Rogue River, Henley, St. Mary's of Medford and Phoenix. The program of events was similar to that for Class B of the Hayward relays. Six field events and five relay contests were part of the program schedule. The Rogue relays served as a tune-up for the Hayward relays. Ashland High tennis squad defeated Eagle Point here Ap ril 10, six matches to one, in the opening match for the Grizzly raquetcers. Matches were played on the high school, college and park ten nis courts. The tennis squad hung up their second consecutive win here on April 12, trimming the Grants Pass outfit six matches to one. April 13, the Klamath Falls tennis squad took the Grizzlies, seven matches to 0. On April 17. the tennis squad of the Grizzly den took Medford, four matches to three. The Mathematical Associa tion of America with the So ciety of Actuaries as co-spon-ser, is sponsoring again this year a high school mathematics contest. This contest is to be offered in Oregon high schools through the cooperation of the New York Section of the As sociation. The contest is to be held on Thursday, May 9, 1957. The contest will be In the form of a multiple choice ex amination limited to material from elementary algebra, in termediate algebra and plane geometry. The student in each school making the highest score on the examination will be awarded a pin that bears the facsimile of the seal of the association. The outstanding student in the state contest will receive special recogni tion. Students who are inter ested in entering the contest should notify Mr. Hackert of the high school mathematics department. B There is going to be an ad dition to the Ashland High cur riculum next year. An arts and crafts class is going to be of fered. A fee of $2.00 will be charged for the two semester course. Mr. Mobley has been ap pointed instructor of the course, which will only be op en to Juniors and seniors. The program will include leather work, copper tooling, enameling, block printing, archery tackle, woodcarving, lettering, plastics, Keene ce ment (casting), small metal crafts, pewter, copper, alumi num, and Marquetry (inlaying pictures). Cottage Grove kept the Class A crown with a total of 83 points. Crater was second with 63 points and Ashland third with 36. Class A discus entry from Teachers, we now have a Sergeant Bilco in our school, only he's a she. Corrupting the school with a new card game, we wouldn't be surprised if she didn't act as a bookie along the side. She shuffles the pit? tures of our newly elected stu dent body officers and yell leaders, deals them out with an amazingly agile sleight-of-hand technique and gives points for each officer and the player with the highest number of points wins. Ashland entered the 880 yard relay also. The Grizzlies brought home a plaque with Col. Bill Hay ward's picture on it, taken a few years before he died and it will be placed in the trophy cases in the lobby of the gym, along with other memorable trophies. Jerry Stubblefield took cred it for the only first for Ashland in the championship bracket by hurling the discus 140 feet, in the short distance meet on March 30 at Medford. In the novice division. Jack Tobias son and Braehm Woodell took first and second in the broad Jump with 18 feet 9 inches. Medford came out on top all the way with their perennial track and field power. Crater Defeats Calling all underclassmen including and especially jun iors beware of the Senior Bench! Just about one more time and we shall be forced to call an electrician. From there on, Mark Fitch, had little trouble with the Medford nine by striking out five, walking one and giving up three safeties. In the nightcap Bowlin pitched a no-hitter until Ows ley hit a single in the fifth. Bowlin struck out five while Shaw and Owsley each whiff ed one Grizzly each. Ashland picked Off its only run in the first inning, when lead-off man Duanc Nelson drew a walk and on two Med ford errors romped home with the winning score.
