APRIL 26. 1957 ROOUE NEWS PAGE THREE Annual Play To Be Given "Don't Take My Penny!" by Anne Coulter Martens is the title of the anniversary play, a comedy in three acts, to be presented May 2 and 3 in the Little Theatre. In the production, play wright Harrison Day Is com ing to town to find the girl to play Dimity West in the movie version of his play, Start in Her Hair. Denise Dodge as Sally is an actress disguised as the Prin- gle's maid. She is determined to have Day choose her to play Dimity. Margaret Hull plays Penny, the Pringle's 16 year old daughter, who decides she wants to be an actress, namely the actress to play Dimity. Joann Genene Seymour, Penny's best friend and ally in the matter of acting. Kerry and Greg, played by George Converse and Danny Seymour respectively, are Penny and Joanna's friends. They are against Penny's be coming an actress for it will interfere with the tennis tour nament and thus they engage in plots to discourage her act ing intentions.. Mel Da'ley. Mel has painted his car emerald green and has had duels on it but remored them because of the rickets he kept receiving. Mel has 2" lowering blocks on his car -which is completely leaded in. He hasn't done any motor work on it as yet so it has a regular stock engine in it. Students Win Speech Firsls ! Winning top honors at Cor vallis with only one other , school, South Salem high, was ! Ashland high school, with two , first places in the finals of the state speecn contest. Tim Keating was awarded the first place cup in impromp tu speaking and his victory gives Ashland High permanent possession of the cup. Tim won the same honor last year, and the preceeding year Richard Lamb was the winner. The other first place cup for Ashland was won by Larry Neal who took top honors in after-dinner speaking. Coach of the Ashland's spech and debate team, Mr. Lewis, reported that there was no question about Ashland tak ing honors in the impromptu class. Gregg Monroe placed first in impromptu winner in the district and placed second in this in the state finals. Winner of the A division de bate this year was Grant High of Portland. Of the first place cups, five were won by South ern Oregon high schools. In ad dition to Ashland's two, Grants Pass won in oration, Medford in discussion and Eagle Point won first in debate In the B di vision. The Gladys Banks' Chapter, named i n memoriam of a former English teacher, held its induction cer emony on March 28. Seven junior and senior stu dents received gold awards in the presence of teachers and parents. They were Lynn Su see, Florence Byrd, Sharon Harden, Pat McKinnis, Yvon ne Click, Judy Campbell, and Diane Bowlin. Two other students, Joy Lorenz and Jeanette Therrcs, were awarded silver charms for their writing ability. Beverly Johnson and June Maddox, sophomores, received certificates denoting honorary membership. Pledged to the society were Darlene Hanscom, Anna Ther res, and Jeanette Peatty. Eddie was blinded in his early childhood by two separate accidents. Al though he was blind, he assur red the students he was not unhappy and that being blind wasn't the worst thing in the world. He and his brother worked together in show business for several years. Then he went to U.C.L.A. for 4 years and stud ied psychology. He said, "Sev eral years ago I quit show bus iness because I became a Chris tian." He said he was doing it just for the money. Eddie ex plained that now he knows money isn't the most important thing in the world. Eddie did unbelievable hand balancing stunts and amazing feats on the parallel bars. He did a glid kip to a hand stand and foreward roles on the bars. Others were the over bar kip to a hand stand and backward rolls. An over bar to a hand stand then to a i strattle cut-off amazed the stu , dents. On the table he did the i hand stand and variations. !
