Cornels Lose
To Bears, 48-34
The Ashland High Grizzlies
romped home in front, 48-34,
Feb. 16, over the Crater Com
ets to get back in the win col
umn after losing Friday night
at Central Point, 39-37.
All the Grizzlies got into
the scoring act in the first per
iod as the patterns by the Ash
landers worked to perfection.
Jack Eberhart hit first for the
Grizzlies with a shot and was
followed by Mark Fitch from
almost the same spot and Ash
land was on its way, rolling to
a 17-5 first quarter margin. At
the half the score was 21-11 in
favor of Ashland.
A one-man scoring spree by
Mark Fitch with four baskets,
kept pace with the foul shoot
ing by Crater during the third
quarter. During that time, the
Comets hit 9 out of 11 in addi
ton to baskets made by Joe
Teeter and Jerry Kime, while
Eberhart made a field basket
and Al Hartwell and Jack
Tobiasson each made a pair of
free throws.
Jack Tobiasson made a pair
of free throws to set the stage
for a pair of beauties by Mel
Dailey from the field to give
the Grizzlies a score of 41-32
with about four minutes left in
the game. From then on Ash
land took control of the ball,
as Dale Olson taking Hart
well's place, hit five out of
eight free throws in addition
to a lay-in for a total of seven
points during the final four
minutes. All ten points made
by the Comets came from the
charity tripe. Ashland hit
eight field goals in each half,
with 24 attempts in the first
two quarters and 16 tries in
the second half for a .400 per
centage Crater held to three
field baskets in the first half
and two in the second, shot 32
times for a percentage of
.156.

Craler Wins
In Overtimes
Crater Comets edged the
Grizzlies, 39-37 in an overtime
play at Central Point. It was
Crater's first win in eleven
starts in the conference. The
Grizzlies led the first three
quarters taking an 8-4 first
quarter lead, then stretching it
to 20-9 at halftime. The Com
ets narrowed the gap in the
third quarter to 24-21 and the
count was knotted at the end
of the regulation 32 minutes,
33-33.
In the first overtime, both
clubs scored four points to en
ter the "sudden-death period"
in which the team to score two
points first wins. John Greb
hit a pair of free throws early
in the period after a foul by Al
Hartwell and the game was
over.
Ashland allowed the Comets
only two field buckets in the
first quarter and a like num
ber plus a free throw in the
second. Jack Eberhart paced
the Grizzly attack with
six points in the opening stan
za, while the second chapter
scoring was spread over the
five starters, each getting a
field goal. Tobiasson picked up
the extra two points from the
charity lanes.
Trailing 24-21, the Comets
lost little time in cutting the
Ashland lead to ribbons. Don
Goyette put the Comets ahead
29-28, but Tobiasson squared
accounts with a free throw to
make it 29-29, with two min
utes left to play. Buckets by
Greb and Goyette were match
ed by field goals by Eberhart
in the final two minutes as the
two teams wound up in a dead
heat, 33-33.
Jerry Kime hit first for the
Comets in the first overtime
period, with Tobiasson count
ering for Ashland. Fred Her
mann put Crater ahead, but
Eberhart with two foul shots
evened it to 37-37. Greb gave
Crater their first win in con
ference play ' by sinking two
foul shots making the final
score 39-37.
Fred Hermann of Crater was
high man of the evening with
17 points with Jack Eberhart
second with 16.

Bears Beat Pels
In Upset Game
The Ashland Grizzlies slap
ped the Klamath Pels down to
size with a score of 50-39 on
Feb. 22. As the final buzzer
sounded, students and towns
people rushed onto the floor to
practically mob the Ashland
Grizzlies.
Klamath took an early 7-1
lead before the Grizzlies got
into action. At the end of the
first period the score was even
up, 15-15. At half time the
Pelicans were ahead 23-21.
Ashland took over at the out
set of the third quarter tieing
the score in the first minute of
play and going into a perma
nent lead in the next thirty
seconds to hand the de-feather
ed Pels their second conference
defeat and their fourth of the
entire season .
Al Hartwell kept the Pels in
a constant state of bewilder
ment in latching onto the ball
at the most opportune times.
Mcl Daily tied the score, 23-
2i, in the first minute of vhe
second half and a half minute
later Fitch brought the score
up to 25. Tobiasson and Eber
nan repeatedly grabbed re-
ounds to add to the Grizzlies
scoreboard.
With a score of 37-28 during
the first 8 minutes of the sec
ond half, the astonished score-
keepers found that the Griz-
zzlies outscored the Pels 17 to
S;X. .
Ashland connected 14 out of
17 7while Klamath hit 13 out
of 18. Four of the five Grizzlies
had a perfect night at the foul
line as Jack Eberhart was the
enly one to miss.

Copple led off the final
chapter by tying the score 29-
29, but Hartwell on a free
throw put Ashland ahead 30
29. Daily clinched the game
with 20 seconds left with his
half of a double infraction
with Perkins who failed to
connect.
The Grizzlies hit a fantastic
percentage of .591 in connect
ing with 13 out of 22 attempts
from the field, while Medford
made 15 out of 33 shots for a
percentage of -.454. Ashland
also controlled the backboard,
23-15.
McLaughlin and Copple
took scoring honors for Med
ford with 16 points each. Mel
Dailey led the Grizzlies with

The Tornadoes broke the
game wide open in the second
half to connect 12 times out of
16 tries in the final two
periods, while Ashland con
nected 8 out of-21 attempts.
At the end of the first period
Ashland was in the lead 14-12.
But at half time Medford was
ahead 28-22 and at the end of
the third quarter Medford led
42-30.
With three minutes to go in
the game with a score of 58-36,
Ashland made 14 points'. "'
' In the last 45 seconds of the
game, Jeck Tobiasson was
attacked by Neil Plumley as he
went up for a shot. Plumley
was eliminated from the game
as it was his fifth personal.
Tobiasson's shot connected and
he was awarded two free
throws because ef the deliber
ateness of the infraction.' The
Grizzly center made the first
shot to bring the total to an
even 50 points. Medford grab
bed the rebound as Toby's sec
ond shot missed and held on
for the remaining seconds,
I This season is the best sea-
son that the Ashland Grizzlies
have had in the last decade. It
would not have been possible
if it were not for the hard
work that the team and Coach
Iba, backed by all AHS stud
ents, put into it.
Ashland finished its season
with an 8-8 record in confer
ence play and a 14-8 mark over
the 22 game season route.
