About Basketball: Coach Silver says, "Return ing to Mcdford will be most of last years Conference Cham pion Team; they were also sec ond in the State Tournament. "Klamath Falls will be big, fast and experienced. "Grants Pass will be experi enced and have probably the tallest players in the confer ence in their center." "Besides lettermen D Fitch, M. Fitch, J. Eberhart, and J Tobiasson, there will be the following players from strong last years Ashland High J.V. team: Mel Dailey, Jim Busch, Kip Lombard, Scott Peterson, Dale Olson, Al Hart well, Roy Gray and Bob Mur ray." According to the coach we'll have a big J.V. turnout. Football: What do you guys think of our J.V. and frosh football teams? If you ask me, you don't think very much of them from the looks of the attendance at the games! I think if ypu'll come out and support them, you'll see your future Confer ence Champions at work. No kidding they're really GREAT! What do you say? Coach Simpson predicts a green varsity basketball team this year with only four letter men Doug Fitch, Mark Fitch, Jack Eberhart, and Jack To biasson. As pointed out by the coach, all of last year's first string have graduated. FROSH SPLIT TWO GAMES Ashland High Frosh started the season Sept. 22 with a loss to Klamath Falls of 25 to 19 on Walter Phillips Field. Although the Pelicans had two more weeks of practice than the Grizzlie Cubs, Ash land put up a good struggle, dominating the game through the second half. The score at the half time was 25 to 6 with Klamath Falls in the lead. On the final play of the game Klamath Falls was pena lized and Ashland's Steve Gray ran 65 yards for the last TD. The Grizzlie Cubs crushed the Crater Comets on Septem ber 29 on the Ashland turf. Cubs held the Comets score less while they scored 20 points. Steve Gray was run ning well as he ran 39 yards for the first two TD"s. Gary Callahan scored the other TD on a three yard smash through center. Jerry Mitchell went through center for one extra point, and Callahan tallied the other on a similar play. Top performers on Ash land's Cugs were Doug For rest, Jerry Walker, Vern Speirs, Mike Brewer, Gary Callahan, Steve Gray, Jerry Mitchell, Bob Hardy, and Paul Alley. When asked what his pre diction was for the Grizzlie Cubs in their .future games, Coach Smith replied, "We'll win Hcdrick and it'll be a toss up for Klamath Fa .Is, Grants Pass, and McLaughlin." The Grizzlies then traveled to Roseburg and were scalped by the Indians 42-0, on Sep tember 14. GRIZZLIES BEAT PIRATES The Ashland team came from behind in the second half to defeat Phoenix 18-12, at Phoenix on September 21. The Phoenix Pirates got off to a flying start, scoring two T.D.'s, but from the middle of the sec ond period on, the Pirates just didn't have a chance against the vicious tackling and block ing of the Ashland club. Touchdowns for the Pirates were made by Jim James and Larry Blunt. Grizzlie touch downs were made by Mark Fitch and Ken Dye. HONKERS DEFEAT AHS Lakeview traveled to Ash- iand t0 Grizzlies 19-6, on September 28. After three quarters of tight defensive ball the Honkers broke the same wide open in the final quarter to score twice in rapid succes sion, with Stewart accounting for all the Lakeview points. Asnianas toucnaown was made by Ken Dye. Bob Murray and Ken Dye were the outstanding players for A.H.S. Murray played on offensive with a dislocated shoulder he received in the first quarter. Jim Witt was taken to the hospital during the first half after injuring his neck in the first quarter, MINERS AVENGE DEFEAT The Yreka Miners avenged their last seasons defeat at the hands of Ashland by tromping the Grizzlies 37-12, at Yreka October 5. Yreka's Tom Wil burn went over from the five yard line and four minutes later Dick King on a reverse went 38 yards for a T.D. to give Yreka a half time score of 12-0. Early in the second half Bob Cooper went 47 yards through the left side to run the count to 18-0. Phil Slover then went over again a few minutes later. Yreka then had a 24-0 margin. The Yreka third touchdown was scored by Bob Cooper from his own 43 yard line. The try for the extra point was good, and the score stood at 31-0 at the end of the third quarter. On four successful aerial attempts, along with ground play, the Grizzlies hit pay dirt the first time on a five yard pass from Ron Mickle to Ken Dye. Then the Miner's Dick King scored on a 42 yard run to the end zone. Dye made Ashland's last T.D. B & G CAFE 11 N. Jim is left end on the Griz zlies. One of our taller boys he stands 6 1", weighs 165. He was born in Talent on Feb ruary 16, 1939, and has gone to Ashland schools all his life. His favorite sports are foot ball, and track. When asked how he likes school, Jim says,. "It's all right, but no college." His future plans are to go into the farming business. Ashland Downed By Grants Pass Ashland Grizzlies fought desperately throughout most of the game before falling to Grants Pass Cavemen 33-4 at Grants Pass last Friday. The cavemen made two TDs in the first quarter. In the sec ond quarter they made one for a half time- score of 20-0. Ash land Grizzlies held their own during the third quarter, but during the fourth quarter. Grants Pass completed two passes for the last T.D. The close of the game found the Grizzlies defending their goal from their three-yard line. Ashland was ahead in first downs, and Ron Mickle, soph omore, put Ashland ahead in passes by completing 12 out of 17. Total yardage favored the Grants Pass team 396 to Ash lands 226. The Cavemen scored early after recovering an Ashland fumble on the 35 yard line. Grants Pass scored late in the final quarter when a pass interference penalty gave the Cavemen the ball on the Ash land one-yard line. Alan McKinnis ran the en suing kickoff back some 80 yards fir Ashland's touch down. Our Jayvee line played ex ceptional! well, with Hank Hampton, Mike Kerns, Ron Mickle, Bob Rosenbaum and Phillip Rodenmayer as top flight performers. Early in the second half Al an McKinnis ran 55 yards for another T.D. Later McKinnis drove 32 more yards to make the score 45-0. Rosenhaum made it 46-0. Matteson a little later drove four yards to change the score to 52-0. Yreka JV traveled to Ash land to get clobbered 52-0 on October 6. Ashland JV's were on their road to victory early in the first quarter when Bill Maurer made a 45 yard T.D. run. Later Yreka lost the baM and Alan McKinnis made it a few feet for the second score of theg ame. Again the try for ex tra point failed, leaving the score 12-0. Kip Lombard, on an inter ception, ran the ball back 37 yards for a third Grizzlie T.D. Doug Fitch made the extra point. Again Yreka lost the ball to the Grizzlies and Ron Mickle made the last yard to score again for Ashland, with Alan McKinnis receiving the extra point. From the Grizzlies 25 yard line an Ashland fumble was re covered by the Miners, but they failed to make the first down and the Grizzlies took over. On a pass from quarterback Mickle, McKinnis made anoth er long run for the fifth Ash land touchdown, with Bob Rosenbaum running the extra point. With Yreka failing to make a first down they punted to the Grizzlies. The Ashland team then fumbled the ball and the Miners took over again. At half time the score stood at 33-0. Alan McKinnis made the first TD's. Don Simpson pass ed to Doug Fitch for 6 points and Jim Matteson intercepted a Pirate pass and ran it back for a tally. Fitch received two passes from Simpson for 2 ex tra points, and Jim Matteson ran across for the remaining joint. Ashlard J.V. grizzlies cuffed '.he Grants Pass Cavemen 26 13, last Monday night at Ash land. Bear quarterback Simpson went through center to rack up the first T.D. Then a few minutes later Grants Pass ev ened the score 6-6. On a pass to Lombard the Bears went a head 12-6, McKinnis made the extra point to make it 13-6. Another pass from Simpson to Lombard put the grizzlies out in front 19-6. On the- kickoff to the Cave men they tried a reverse and dropped the ball, each player continuing on his own way; they never realized their mis take until Ashlands Matteson galloped through, picked up the ball and scored from 20 yards out. This put -.he Ash land J.V.'s out in front 26-6. In the final quarter Grants Pass made their final T.D. to leave the score 26-13.
