Coach Snuffy Smith has a fin nucleus of able lelier men and a large turnout of freshmen to work with in baseball. All of this young talent is going to pay big dividends for Ashland's base ball hopes in the future. In track. Coach Mel John son's relay teams comprised of Stuart Baker, Harry Johnson, Dale Jeffers, Verle Yates and Jim Witt have been looking partcularly good. Also, Dick Schulz and Gene Parent have been puting on fine perform ances in the high jump every meet. Schulz has already clear ed 5' 11" twice this year. This year's tennis team seems to be comprised of mostly sen iors, yet Coach Robert Todd pointed out that many fresh men, sophomores and juniors were on the tennis ladder and that an extensive amount of match play was constantly go ing on. So far Medford seems to be dominating the conference in track and tennis and leading along with Grants Pass in baseball. Medford is once again the choice of most ex perts to win the state track championship, with Rose burg loming as a contender. A new type of intramural game has been introduced by Al Simpson this year. This game, called "Whisket," is played with nine men and seems to represent a type of in door baseball game. All inter ested contact Coach Simpson. COMETS DOWN GRIZZLIES, 2-0 The Bears were shut out in their game with the rival Cra ter Comets by a score of 2-1. Don Johnson was Crater's big offensive weapon as his first triple enabled him to score from third following an Ash land bobble. The Grizlies collected 64 points, Crater took second with 64, followed by Yreka with 23. The Grizzlies were paced to their triumph by six first places. Richard Schulz took first in the high jump with a 5' 11" ef fort. Stuart Baker won both the 100 and 220 yard dashes, clip ping off the 100 in 11 seconds. Harry Johnson placed first in the pole vault with- a 10' 9" BEARS LOSE TO K. FALLS The Grizzly baseball team, coached by Snuffy Smith, col lected 9 hits and 5 runs off of the Klamath fireballer, Dave D'Olivio, but still lost a hard fought game by a 6-5 count. In the second game, the Griz zlies were hurt by several er rors, and lost 6-3. The Grizzlies were able to get enough hits, but were un able to move the base runners in to score enough times to de- feat the Pels. Gene Parent and Lance Locke led the Grizzly batters by collecting 6 hits out of 8 times at bat and 5 hits in 6 times at bat respectively. a Klamath Beats Tennis Squad Coach Robert Todd's Ashland tennis team ran into trouble with the high altitude and lost 6-1 meet with the Klamath Pelicans. Although several matches were relatively close, only one Bear, David Woods was able o defeat his opponent. G.A. A. ELECTS NEW OFFICERS The Girls Athletic Associa tion held a meeting, Tuesday, April 19, for the election of new officers for next year. Hayward Relays Ashland placed seventh in the "A" division of the annual Hayward Relays on the Uni versity of Oregon campus at Eugene by piling up a total of 20 points. The Bear 440 relay team of Harry Johnson, Verle Yates Jim Witt and Stuart Baker placed second." Another second was garnered for Ashland in the shuttle hurdles with some fine running on the part of Gary Taylor, Gene Allen and Dale Cullop. Dick Schulz, Gene Parent and Doyce Lemley plac ed fourth in the high jump, and Harry Johnson also tied for fourth in the pole vault. P.ogue Relays The Ashland track squad tied for fourth with Klamath Falls in the annual Rogue Relays at Medford. The Black Tornado win the meet with 81 points, followed by Grants Pass with 70. Marshfield ith 50, Ash land and Klamath Falls tvina for fourth with each piling up 38 points and Crater finishing last with 37. The high jump team of Dick Schulz, Gene Parent and Doyce Lemley tied for first in the high jump relay event. Harry Johnson placed third in the pole vault, and the relay team of Johnson, Yates, Witt and Baker placed second in the 440 relay. The Grizzlies also took third in the 880 relay with a team of Johnson, Witt, Jeffers and Baker. AHS Loses To Cavemen Grizzly baseballers lost the first of a two-game series with the Grants Pass Cavemen by a score of 6-3. Grants Pass jumped off to an early first inning lead, 3-0. In their part of the first inning the Bears came right back as Par ent walked and Phil Sword hit a tremendous home-run onto the football field. In the second inning, Ash land tied the game up as Jim Sutherlin stole home on an er ror by the Caveman catcher. The fourth inning proved the decider as with two men on ba se, Chuck Nevi of Grants Pass. managed to collect a four-bag ger via a Bear error. Second Game The Bears were shutout. 3-0 in the second Caveman game. The big inning for Grants Pass was the sixth, when James, Krumholtz, and Burr singled, followed by a base on balls to Carson, and Oden's hit due to a Grizzly error, scoring the third GP baserunner. All members of the Griz zly team were beaten by the more experienced Medford net- men, some of which are among the top players in the state. Grants Pass Match The Ashland netters lost all but one match in their annual meet with the Grants Pass Cavemen. The total scores were Crater 57, Klamath Falls 48 and Ashland 45. The two Ashland runs came in the 5th inning when Pete Cotton doubled, Mark Fitch walked, a sacrifice out, and a wild throw to first enab led both Cotton and Fitch to score.
