SPRING SPORT GOLF
"Fore," "Hole in One," "I
broke 100 today." No, this isn't
an interview with the head
warden in the state hospital; in
fact, these phrases can be
heard almost any day at the
Oak Knoll Country Club . . .
As you may have guessed,
these terms belong to the game
of golf.
Golf is a great sport you
start at 8 o'clock in the morn
ing and chase litle white balls
up and down, through the most
apalling assortment of trees,
shrubs, and blackberry bushes.
Of course there are wide,
green fairways, but the game is
seldom played on these as there
are sand traps and water haz
ards with which to keep your
self busy. In case you are still
interested in the game of golf,
there are lessons to be had at
a nominal sum at the local
country club.

The AHS Grizzlies finished
their 1954 season with a 10
won and 12 lost record. Al
though the Bears failed to hit
the "500" mark they did have
a good season. The Ashland
Crew did very good in their
pre-seascu play by winning 5
game:) and losing only one
gume. The Grizzlies defeated
the Cougars from Illinois Val
ley twice and took singletons
trom Myrtle Creek, Del Norte
High of Crescent City, and
from Willamette High from
Eugene. Their only loss came
at the hands of the Willamette
High squad.
Starting their league play
tiie Bears got off to a bad start
by losing to league favorite
Grants Pass twice. The next
weekend they traveled to
Klamath Falls and lost both of
the games there. The following
week the Bears, improving
fast, lost two hard fought ball
games to Medford, with one
loss coming on a last second
basket.
Taking a "breather" between
halves of conference play the
Grizzlies took on the tough
Crater Comets. The two clubs
split the four game series, with
each club winning on its home
court. After the final game at
the Crater Comets court a near
riot ensued.
A much improved Grizzly
squad resumed the second half
of their conference play by
losing two hard fought games
to the Cavemen from the "Cli
mate City" in the last two min
utes of each ball game.
The Klamath Falls Pelicans
invaded the Grizzly domain
the following weekend . and
were soundly trounced by the
Bears. In their final two games
the Grizzlies lost their first
game to the Black Tornado
from the "Pear City" but then
overcame a 13 point deficit to
defeat the favored Black "TO
MATO" squad from Medford.

Baseball Preview
By Walt McCoy
Now that basketball season
is over, a young mans fancy
turns to baseball.
This year Head Coach Al
Simpson will be greeted by six
lettermen: two 3-year letter
men; Ted Tenney and Walt Mc
Coy; one 2-year letterman;
Clarence Baker; and three 1
year lettermen; Jim Sutherlin,
Jim Watrus and Phil Sword.
Ted Tenney was an outfield
er last year but probably will
be shifted to the infield. Walt
McCoy was the main stay deep
in center field, while Clarence
Baker was a flash at short stop
and did his share of pitching.
Phil Sword played back stop
for Baker's pitches and was
heavy hitter. Holding down the
position of short stop and sec
ond base, Jim Watrus led the
team in hitting. Jim Sutherlin
patrolled the left field and
was improving his hitting near
the end of the season last year.
Stuart Baker and Gene Par
ent are expected to fill in at
first base and pitcher respectiv
ely. Others that are expected
to turn out are Kenna Gandee.
Haroll Castle, Blackie Mitchell
and a host of promising fresh
men. Coach Simpson will have a
difficult time finding someone
to fill the spot left at third base
by last year's captain. Bill
Welch, but from all reports,
Dave Dickinson is just the man
to fill the bill.
