March 27, 1953 ROGUE NEWS PAGE THHEE Speech Group Takes Honors Ashland High's student body can be proud of the honors earned by debaters at the Lin field College speech tourna ment held in McMinnville, Feb ruary 19, 20 and 21. First place trophy for radio and first place for talent show were won by Nancy Dunkeson and Bob Ed son, Richard Lamb, and Nancy Dunkeson. It was announced by Debate Coach Herb Lewis that seven of the eleven Ashland students who entered the contest reach ed the finals. Mr. Lewis also announced that Ashland was the only school which had three debate teams from one school in the finals. Honors in individual events went to Richard Lamb, who reached the finals in humorous declamation as well as placing third in men's impromptu; Glen Ingle, who got into the inter view finals, and Nancy Dunke son who placed second in seri ous declamation. In the Junior men's debate di vision of 31 teams, Nancy Dun keson and Bob Edson placed third in the last seven teams in the finals, while Wanda Oden and Mary Jean Davis in the junior women s debate tied with Eugene for second place in a field of 22 finalists. This year is the first time that most of the Ashland students have been entered. Students who made the trip to McMinnville were Bob Ed son, Betty Blatter, Elaine Fal well, Maxine Champion, Wanda Oden, Richard Lamb, Mary Jean Davis, Bob Laws, Glen Ingle, Don Laws, and Nancy Dunkeson. About 11 girls attended while Nadine George and Lorraine Rosa chaparoned. The party, held after the girls returned from the Grants Pass game, was really enjoyed, despite the fact that at 2:30 a. m. the key to the YMCA still hadn't been found and no one could get in the building. The girls played the piano, the juke box, ate doughnuts, and tried to keep the chapa rones awake, before finally getting a few hours sleep. Miss George's cocker spaniel. Chat, was the party's guest of honor. He also served as chapa rone. Breakfast was prepared by the girls the following morn ing. What's in a Name Are you troubled? Manly? A gift of God? Y Group Paints; To Have Congress Coed Hi-Y, consisting of Tri- Hi-Y and Hi-Y Club members has been making plans for fu ture gatherings. Members met Wednesday, March 4, and selected four delegates for the Youth Legis lature to be held in Salem, April 24 and 25. They are Sharlee McNerney,Lee Anne Leach, Johnie Johnson and Elaine Falwell. Painting the YMCA building is a current project. Members are soliciting businesses or 12 gallons of paint. Jerry was born in Taft, California, May 8, 1935. He went to school in Bakers field, California, until the seventh grade. Then moving to Ashland, he has continued his schooling here. Working on cars is Jerry's hobby, and he spends most of his spare time working on them. Asked what his likes and dislikes were, he stated that he liked "girls" and dislikes school. His favorite food is hamburgers, his favorite song is "Oh Happy Day," and he said his favorite class was Mr. Lewis's. Jerry's pet expression is, "I like it." His most embarrass ing moments are when he has to get up in front of class to say something. Asked what his favorite pastime was, the answer was, ha, ha! Jerry belongs to the Sports man's Club here in school and enjoys it very much. As he does not plan to go on to college, Jerry is going to get a job somewhere and work. a The decrepit old car crept up to the toll bridge. "Fifty cents," cried the gate- man. Barbara's favorite song is "Why Don't You Believe Me" while ice cream tops her list of ioods. Her favorite period dur ing the school day is steno class. People who say Van Fleet instead of Van Vleet and teach ers who load on homework are her pet peeves, but Barbara has a special liking for blue Plymouths! Many clubs claim her inter est; she belongs to Quill and Scroll, Coed Hi-Y and Tri Hi-Y. She will become Queen of Jobs Daughters in June. Barbara's ideal man must "have two legs, two arms, two eyes and not more than three heads." Do you know anyone fitting that description? Her most embarrassing mo ment happened once when she was in California. When going to comb her hair, she accident ally went into the wrong room! W. Knox's lives. A oon was born to them, whom they named Sidney George Knox, known to the kid3 as "Sid." Born in Grants Pass, Oregon, Sid then moved to Ashland and has gone to school here all his school days. Sid stands 6 feet tall now: so he has grown a bit since his baby days at Grants Pass. Sid's first love is radios, but he dearly loves to tinker with "hot" cars and motorcycles. His pet expression is "play it cool." He isn't particular about his "ideal;" so he must not be vi.-ry fussy. He likes friend liness in girls and dislikes "cops who stop you for some thin gs." As far as music, Sid likes "Blues" and "Oakie Music." He belongs to the Grizzly Knights here in school. After graduation, Sid plans to either get a job or join the Navy. Compliment someone on something sometime soon.
