Grizzlies Beat
Chieflians 51-36
The Ashland Grizzlies down
ed the Rogue River quint Fri
day, December 19, 51 to 36.
The Grizzlies had two good
quarters, and scored 15 points
in each the first and fourth
quarters, while holding the
Chieftians to five in each can
to. As had happened in the pre
vious tilts this winter, the
Grizzlies were severely under I
pressure at halftime, since they
had barely a 23 to 20 lead at
the half. Byron Kile, the only
remaining member of the
Rogue River's state B champs
of last year, canned 21 to take
hiyh scoring honors.
The Grizzlies looked best in
the first quarter but were guil
ty of mechanical errors later
in the ball games.
Gregg Lininger topped Ash
land with 16 counters, and
Harvey Woods followed with
12. Glen Ingle and Jerry Ward,
combined with Lininger, were
able to control the backboards
most of the game.
In the preliminary, Gene
Allison's Jayvees waited until
the last quarter before com
pletely overcoming the Rogue
River jayvees, 50 to 32. The
score was 8 to 7, 21 to 18, and
28 to 27 at the quarter marks,
all in favor of Ashland. Jerry
Mickle, Ashland guard, had 12
points to tie for honors with
Johnson, Rogue River guard.
TRAGEDIES IN GIRLS P. E.
Girls basketball isn't at all
safe, sometimes. For example,
Tuesday, January 13, two
teams were engaged in a close
game when, all of a sudden,
Kathy York received an unex
pected basketball right on the
nose. As Kathy ran upstairs
with a bloody nose, Ramona
Mitchell stamped on the floor,
bruised her toes, counted them
to see if they were all there,
jumped up, and was off play
ing again.
The game was going all
right until the ball went under
Nancylee Olson's feet at the
wrong time and she was down
with bruised ribs. Nancylee
was out of the game for the
day.
Substituting for one of the
injured players, while posed
after making a basket a play
er was pushed into Miss Na
dine George. Her glasses were
broken into "eleventy-eight"
pieces and part of the glass
went into her eye. But she
rushed to the doctor who put
a big patch on one eye. "Dead
eye" George survived.
Barbara Van Vleet "I've
changed my mind."
Mrs. Christlieb: "Atta girl!
Does the new one work any
better?"
Bill Welch "Have any of
your boyhood hopes been realized?"
Mr. Lewis: "Yes, when my
mother used to comb my hair,
I wished I hadn't any.
Grizzlies Vallop Cougars 67-34
The Ashland High School
Grizzlies scored 45 points in
a one-sided second half Friday,
December 12, to trample Illin
ois Valley 67 to 34 on the jun
ior high gym floor here.
Unable to hit the basket in
the first half, the Grizzlies
were able to hold only a 22
to 19 lead at half-time.
The Grizzlies finally found
an eye for the basket in the
third quarter. Ashland scored
10 consecutive points before
hoop, and the score was near
ly doubled by the end of the
quarter.
The fourth quarter was just
about the same as the third
as the Grizzlies made 20 points
and held the Cougars to 10.
Coach John Rossi played 12
players; 11 were able to score.
Harvey Woods, who has an in
jured knee, saw little action
and failed to score.

Crater High
The Ashland Grizzlies even
ed this year's score with the
Crater Comets Friday, January
2, on the high school floor in
Central Point, winning 43 to
38 and gave each of the teams
a win in the four-game series.
The Grizzlies took the lead
in the early minutes of the
game as Gregg Lininger sank
a pair of foul shots to put the
Grizzlies ahead 2 to 0. Lin
inger scored six points in the
first quarter to give Ashland
their 11 to 8 lead at the end of
the quarter. The Grizzlies
were able to hold their lead
throughout the second quarter;
however. Crater narrowed the
margin to 21 to 18 after a surge
just before halftime.
The two teams fought it out
i even terms in the third
quarter, with Crater coming
within one point, 29 to 28, at
one time. Jerry Ward sank a
bucket to give Ashland the
lead, 31 to 28. The Grizzlies
started to run away with the
game in the fourth quarter,
running the count to 38 to 29
in the first few minutes.
Only 11 charity points were
made out of 36 attempts by
the Grizzlies. Jim Jeffries and
Gregg Lininger made 12 points
each to share for high honors.
