PAGE 4 THE ROGUE NEWS FRIDAY, MAY 19. 1944 TlP-DFf BY TflflUm Well, the sports program for this year to Just about finished. And as we look back over the athletic accomplishments this has probohly been the best year for sports in the history of Ashland High. Things started with bang last fall, with a very light team taking the gridiron, under the directioa of Al Simpson. After dropping an opener to K. Falls ,the mighty Grizzlies rolled over team after team, osing only one more that season, to a very strong Eureka squad. Sparked by a cannon-ball left-half Barney Riggs, the Ashland team amassed 262 points to 99 for their opponents. When football season was over, nobody dreamed the alma mater tvoulu have more than ft fuir basketball quintet, and after the first few encounters, most of us were sure that It wouldn't even be that good. Then came a few changes in the line-up and things really began to happen. Victory after victory was credited to the Grizzlies, and when the conference race was over Ashland had a secure berth at the state tournament. What happened then is now history in the ath letic records of Ashland High. Three victories (over St. Helens, Washington of Portland, and Bend) and the Grizzlies brought home the first state championship to come to Ashland in 22 years. Besides winning the title Ashland placed two men, Jim Bartelt and Barney Riggs on the All-State first team. To top them all off, baseball was revived and Simpson tutored a swell diamond nine which ended with a season record of winning four and losing five. Ashland fin ished second in the Southern Ore gon High School league and Riggs, playing catcher and third base, led the loop in batting. In track this spring, Ashland lettered more men than ever be fore in the history of the school. Tad Gandee was the biggest find, being only Ashland man to qualify for the state tournament. Five Ashland men entered the district meet, Barney Riggs, Jim Bartelt, Gordon Peterson, John Reedy, and Gandee, to garner 11 points for 5th place. i Now that sports program is over and another year coming up, we would like to pay tribute to Coach Simpson, who directed ev ery sport and all the intrumural activities.
