THE ROGUE NEWS
MOV DAT, MARCH 20, 1944
1944 Hoop
From the opening Weed en
counter to Use final tourney
clash, Ashland Hi's hoop season
pyramided from a mediocre start
to a brilliant climax.
With the start of the season,
the Grizzlies first ran into a
tough Weed team that Just could
n't miss, and the Red and White
dropped two close ones in the
upset. In continuing their North
ern California trip, Ashland de
feated Yreka twice, 44-20, 60-24.
Next Coach Simpson's boys ven
tured to the coast only to be
outclassed by North Bend and
Marshfield, 31-25 and 20-19, re
spectively. Although losing to
these two preps, they managed to
oome through with a win over
Myrtle Point, 37-32.
Then for the annual Jamboree
and the Grizzlies' first conference
till. Ashland drove the Grants
Pass Cavemen back Into their
cave, 37-17, in a hot evening for
the locals. The Red and White
went ahead later in the season to
win all four frays of the sched
uled four-game series, 30-27, 36-
21 and 47-24.
After a week of strenuous prac
tice, the Lithians were convoyed
over the Green Springs to meet
last year's state champs, Klam
ath Falls, for a two-game series.
The flist night the Pelicans out
played AH 3 to the tune of 34-29,
and the second 29-25. The two
games at Ashland showed the K
men not so successful in captur
ing the Grizzly "gizard," as so
stated in the Klamath Krater.
However, they gave the Ashland
aggregation a good battle that

was enjoyed by all, with scores of

Next on the list was Medford
here to open their four-tilt tus
sle against a determined Grizzly
squad, but the determination
wasn't enough to fill the gap of
a 35-33 margin due to Bob WcJs
enburger's last-second heave from
the mid-stripe. This was the last
time that Medford reached the
win column against their tradi
tional rivals, as the Ashland boys
made it three straight, 39-35,
43-20 and 39-28.
As the localltes took off over
mountainous landscapes to Rose
burgh, they met a tough bunch
of hoopsters that gave them
bad time. Our lads again hit the
canvas in the. first of the four
sessions. Ashland then proceeded
to whip the Indians three in a
row, 30-22. 43-30 and 41-39.
From . there on the Grizzlies
finished things up in a blaze of
glory, sweeping the District 2
tourney, and going to win the
state title at Salem.
This sums up an excellent sea
son for the Ashland High Griz
zlies, the "casaba kings" of

a favored Washington High of
Portland who had just squeezed
past Pendleton. The local boys
looked a little better than the
day before but they still lacked
the old drive. Washington lead
until the 3rd quarter, when the
Grizzlies finally began to snap
out of it. It was Bartelt and
Landing who really paid off in the
final stanza by squelching a
Washington rally that nearly gave
the game to the Portlandera. Rob
erson got a tinvly feild goal and
the game ended 33-30. Riggs, af
ter playing a smashing game that
had the Washington defenses on
the run, left via the foul route
early in the fourth quarter.
After the game the cups were
presented and the An-State team
announced. Those chosen for the
honor were Barney Riggs and Jim
Bartelt, Ashland, Curt Luckey
and Wade Cowan, Springfield,
and Jerry Krafve, Washington.

Though 1944 seemed to be a
bad year for Sainin-lon, he was
still one of the best men on the
team. Jay is the modest man who
represented the Grizzlies on the
honorable mention division of All
Conference teams, thus making it
possible to have at least one of
the locals on each all-star team.
In his sophomore yeur, be led the
conference in scoring and was
chosen for the second team in All
Conference. With still one year to
go, he should be one of the top
men in the district. Hi-Y boasts
Samuelson as its vi;e-president.
After two years with the B
squad, Del Landing suddenly blos
somed forth into a No. 1 star.
Though his previous basketball
life is limited, everyone agrees
that no other player on the Griz
zly team can be credited with
pulling the chestnut out of the
fire as often as Del. This happen
ed quite regularly in the confer
ence games and the fracas with

okay in football likewise and he's
doing fine right now with Emily
