Unknown to many, not understood by more, is the contest annually sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Recently the senior class met and elected one of its sixty-six girls to represent it in the D. A. R. contest. This girt will receive a pin, fill out a questionnaire and hope to go to Washington,-but most important of all, she knows that she is the choice of her classmates. She has been chosen because of those quali ties that she possesses which make her outstanding in her group. She is judged on her dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. This year Celene Morgan received the majority of the votes cast by the seniors. When the seniors voted, they must have thought of her dependability in her work. Celene edits the paper, helps in the office, and still always haa time to do all her classwork. They must have thought of her service, the service which has made her so popu lar with both students and teachers. They must have thought of her leadership. They must have remembered how the slim, dark-haired girl scold .d reporters without offending, urged associate editors with out commanding, and presided over her home room so expertly. They must have thought of her patriotism. They must have recalled the loyalty to Ashland high that helped make her decide to remain in Ashland when her family moved away, and the loyalty which leads her to spend much of her time in working toward improvements both in her school and in her home. Each individual must have remembered some one incident, some favor, some deed of this outstanding girl which led thsm to choose her as their candidate for this state honor. Yes. the girl chosen should well be proud. Congratulations. Celene Morgan, an honor well earned. Congratulations, senior class, an honor well bestowed. Peggy Whittle. LET'S GET IT FINISHED! It has been announced in the junior and senior home rooms that the annual pictures are now being taken. Because of uncertain con ditions which affect the engravers, the pictures are being taken earlier than usual. A deadline of Feb. 9 has been set and all pictures should be in by then. This gives the students plenty of time to get their appointments and have the pictures taken, if the pictures are not in by the time set the editorial staff will be obliged to send off the rest of the photographs to the engravers regardless. So if you are planning to have your picture in the annual, the sooner you have it taken the better. L. R. THAT'S NO LIE He spied his neighbor coming along the road with his fishing tackle on his back. "Catch anything .old boy?" he eagerly asked. "Yes, two." "Good! What were they?" "The 7:30 there and the 5:15 back," came the unhappy angler's reply. Hr. Beau Bummcl By TUT C'HKISTIJEB TIME OUT! . . , BOY TROUBLE: You'd think, what witn so many otner tnings to worry about, that a gins social me wouid take caie of itself for awhile. But no. Least of all, I guess, in January, jutyl as you re ail set for a montn tui of leslivities, something goes haywire with your date puius. me right tellow is nowhere 10 be seen. He s off in another direction, and you don't seem to be able to say anything or do anything about it. Let's call an emergency meeting of two. We can pool what we know about getting along with boys and maybe emerge witn some line of strategy that will make it clear sailing tor . . . well, for a month or so anyhow. In the first piace, what do boys like in girls? No wonder you won der! For years now you've been hearing that boys want, above ev erything else, a natural quality. That goes for looks as well as actions. Just as you make up your mind to abandon glamor for saddle shoes and box and decide to have some fun out of life again, you turn around in time to see all the sterling young men in school simply bowled over by something new in high heels, much make-up and a fussy silk dress. You would expect to see at least one or two thumbs turned down, but what do you see? The havoc that young miss created in her one trek down the hall could put many a profes sional glamor girl to shame. And she's not the only example you can cite! Here you are, left at the start ing post, with the book of rules in your hands. There are those other girls, going full speed ahead and paying no attention to the rules at all. What can you do about it? Well, the answer may not seem very satisfying but I'm quite sure it's right: wait. The kind of fel low you want for a friend isn't going to be interested in mere flash very seriously or very long. Your shiny nose and bouncing en thusiasm will be good., contrast. He will be back. But what do boys like in girls? A fellow likes to be proud of his girl. That doesn't necessarily mean she has to be beautiful, though I'll admit that gives you a head start on the rest of us. It means she has a clean, well-scrubbed look about her. She bubbles ever so little just enough to make you suspect she gets a real kick out of life. They want you to be discriminating and conserva tive with your affection. If you're sincere about it, they'll respect you the more for it. "A boy likes a girl who is in terested in a lot of things, who is easy to talk to and fun to be with," is the way a boy once summed it up. There's one last rule: Don't try too hard to please. Over-eagerness has ruined the beginning of more than one beautiful friendship. A little bit of independence and some well-chosen compeittion ap plied wisely can da a lot toward improving relationships. SOCE is offering a secretarial science course for students who are interested in commercial work. The classes are being held at Ashland high school from 4 p. m. to 6 p. m. under the direction of Mrs. White and Miss Fry. Some AHS graduates taking this work are Jack Merritt, Annes Norris, Clara Ann Roberson, Gay lord Vestal, Carol McCollum and Nina Hess. Those students who have left us at mid-term are as follows: Russell Hawk, Martin Herrin, Donald Warren, Joe McCallister and Gayle Carter. Others are qualified to graduate but are con tinuing until spring. HELPFUL HINT "Did you mail those two letters I gave you, Norah?" "Yes, I did, ma'm, but I noticed you put the 2-cent stamp on the foreign letter and the 5-cent stamp on the city letter." "Oh, my why didn't you bring them back?" "No need of that, ma'm I just changed the addresses on the envelopes." ROUTINE PROCEDURE Harry Well, I'll have to go home now and explain to my wife. Henry Explain about what? Harry How do I know? GARB GOSSIP YiplIP By BETTY WHITTLE Flash! The latest fad at AHS seems to be wearing one sock of one color and the other of another. While this hasn't yet taken the entire school by storm, some of the boys were overheard saying that it is a good way to wear out your old anklets and still stay in style. Skirts and sweaters, supple mented by blouses, are still the popular garb. Among the popular sweater styles we find the loose, slloppy pull-overs, and classical fitted cardigans and slip-ons. V necks have shown up more and more in the pull-overs, with em phasis on the V-f or-victory theme. Slightly behind, but gaining fa vor as spring approaches, are dresses. These are mostly shirt waist style sport dresses in bright or dark colors. As spring ap proaches we shall probably see more and more of those light cot ton prints and pinafores. While tne clothes are popular for school, a soft tailored dress of wool or rayon is especially nice for dates or evening wear. An other becoming style is the rayon crepe dress with drndle skirt and Hawaiian print bodice. A good match or mix, good for either dates or school, is a wool sport suit of either tweed, plaid or plain-colored material. The de sign may be with pleats, flares, pockets or any way you want it. These are always popular and es pecially adaptable, being worn either with blouses or sweaters. HOME ROOMS SPONSOR GIRLS' LEAGUE PROGRAM Betty Dunn presided over the first Girls' League meeting of '42 Monday, Jan. 19. Following the short business meeting, the pro gram, under the supervision of Dode Frideger, began. The sophomore and junior girls were in charge of the entertain ment. The program included Miss Brasted's mountaineers under "the direction of Arnita Black Miss Loosley's chorus girls. Miss Fry's barber shop singers and Miss Woods's black boys, Harlalee Wil son and Walter Graham, in a short play. The next Girls League program will be conducted by the senior girls under the direction of Miss Hulst and Mrs. White. THE AWFUL TRUTH They were discussing a mutual friend. "Jackson told me something I never knew before," said Briggs. "He declares that his grandfather used to tell him that he'd des cended from one of the greatest hcuites in England." His companion smiled knowingly- "Yes," he replied, "I did hear the story about the old man fall ing off a roof he was repairing for Lord Somebody-or-other."
