letter to the community informing patrons
o f their decision two days earlier, citing de
creasing revenue and increasing costs. “D ur
ing the past nine years we have had a lot of
struggles, but we have also had the honor
and privilege to meet some awesome people,
and watch them grow into leaders of the
LGBTQ_community,” read the letter.
A year after rebranding Portland’s only
lesbian bar, The E-Room-turned-Weird Bar
owner Kim Davis shuttered its doors in late
August, citing a financial “hole we let get too
deep.” At the time, Davis told Just
Out that though she was sad to see it
all go, the nationally hyped E-Room
was “the biggest thing I’ve ever
done.”
Speaking o f rebranding, Pauline
Miriam rechristened her multi-city
H ot Flash juggernaut of ladies
nights as Inferno, and Old Town
mainstay Barracuda became Cuda
Beach Club. In June CC Slaugh
ters’ director of marketing and en
tertainm ent David Pettit confirmed
to Just Out that owners John H ous
ton and Bruce Rice were opening a new CC
Slaughters in Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexi
co, though as o f press time, no opening date
had been posted at ccslaughterspv.com.
Gary H opping called it a day on his SW
Washington store The Funny Bone but re
mained as an online-only venture. The
downtown location had also served as a re
tail venue for Ron P itt’s Balloons on Broad
way, which continued to oifer event decorat
ing i»nd delivery services out of its SE Main
Street location by appointment.
Late in the year, skivvies pur
veyor UnderU4Men announced
the relocation and expansion of
its downtown store, with plans
for a new, 5,000-square-foot flag
ship space at 800 SW Washing
ton in February 2012.
After over a year o f litigation,
Portland Gay and Lesbian Yel
low Pages and Unity Portland
Pages reached a settlement in
their federal lawsuit, with both
parties agreeing to publish non-competing
publications. U PP had not released a second
edition of its directory since its debut during
Portland Pride 2010.
Finally, the home of one o f Portland’s
longest operating gay bars was razed the
week of August 1 with little fuss. The Dirty
Duck Tavern closed in August 2009 after
serving the bear and leather community for
25 years. The Portland Development C om
mission, which owned the property, ended
the D uck’s lease to build a new homeless

The Duck’s former owner, Gail Kennedy,
told Just Out in August of her intentions to
open a new bar, this time with her husband
and son. “It’s going to be another family af
fair,” said the third-generation bar owner, fol
lowing her mother and grandmother. “I’ll be
back. My family isn’t easy to get rid of.” J#]
