Mister Heavenly brings “doom w op” to Branx

Netrippers FC Weekly Practice & Scrim
mage. Open to all! (11:00 a.m., Duniway
Park, SW 6th and Sheridan, netrippers.org)
Out o f the mashes—yes, we said that— o f indie rock royalty comes M ister
Heavenly, a moniker so divine we started thinking rainbows and butterflies
and the all-you-can-eat buffet at Shoney’s the moment we learned the band
was playing at Branx.
And then we heard the trios self-coined “doom wop.”
Now we’re just as swoony— albeit in a different, darker way.
United by a shared love o f 1950s vocal-based R&B and that, age-old lyrical
impetus, ill-fated romance, Nick Thorburn (Islands, The Unicorns), Ryan
Kattner (Man Man) and Joe Plummer (Modest Mouse) collaborated for what
they call “a state o f mind rather than a nitpicky micro genre.”The result is their
debut release, the fittingly titled Out of Love, due August 16 on Sub Pop.
Tunes like “Bronx Sniper”— an indignant kiss-off o f militant drums, grungy
guitars and love so dangerous it “la la la”s along one moment, explodes in re
morseless cries o f “I shot you down” the next— bring the sonic “doom.” Else
where, jaunty, summer-ready jams like “Pineapple Girls,” with its power-chord
riffs and singsong melody, will have listeners wop-ing and bopping their heads
in moody glee. It’s no wonder the supergroupers describe their music as “post-
apocalyptic Valley Girl meets the American Graffiti soundtrack.”
All that, and have we mentioned that the Mister Heavenly gents purport
to love dogs? Or that adorkable actor Michael Cera (Juno Nick and Nora’s
Infinite Playlist) has toured with them on bass?
Just sayin’— altogether swoony.
