“There’s something about summer, be it the balmy temps, shedding o f clothes
or sheer variety of offerings, that whets our appetites. Case in point: not one but
two culinary fetes sure to get your hankering on—and for a good cause.
For Kenny & Zukc's First Annual Pickle Throwdown, the renowned deli
catessen dudes are going all out for a benefit for the Oregon Food Bank. The
all-day tasting event includes People’s Choice Awards and a celebrity judging
panel including Storm Large. Local eateries the likes of Biwa.Gruner, Mctrovi-
no and Toro Bravo will submit their finest pickles in four categories: “Classic
Cucumber,’’“Sweet Pickles,’’“Not Involving a Cucumber”and “Portland Weird."
Curious as to what a “Portland Weird" pickle entails? So are we.
Speaking of green, organizers for the 2011 Brunch on the Bridge festival
promise a bigger, greener and better event than ever. The open-air “extreme
food” picnic experience doubles in size this year to 28,000 square feet, covering
all six spans of the Hawthorne Bridge in fresh grass. Folks are encouraged to
bring canned goods for this year’s beneficiary, B-Shares, a local bike delivery
program serving hungry populations in need. From Voodoo D oughnut’s unveil
ing of “the W orld’s Largest Box o f Doughnuts” to family-friendly games and a
picnic-table art auction, brunch has never sounded so fun.
