It’s All Happening
New lady- and queer-operated tape label cel
ebrates first release
If you you didn’t think something like “grunge folk” could happen, you’d be
wrong. It is so Happening, in fact. That’s the name of the latest sonic venture
from Em Brownlowe (former Swallows frontwoman) and Adrianne Sharrock
(Sick Sick Sister), who’ve joined forces with Shannon Wade (The I’s/Litter
Meet) for a “bluesy, sometimes boozy” mashup of pop hooks, power chords
and post-Riot Grrrl attitude.
The Happening also happens to be the first effort from new Portland-
based, lady- and queer-operated tape label Cassingle and Loving It Records
(aka C .A .L .I.). The Record Room plays host to a July 23 release party and
performance, an evening destined to flash back to the indie glory of the early
.‘90s. Hell, what’s more early ‘90s than the use of the word “cassingle"?
For a taste of The Happening’s grrr-ific mix, YouTube the clip for “Two
Becomes One,” a lo-fi, high-energy romp through gender roles and rock ‘n’
roll— on roller skates. The trio’s hooky brew of flannel, fuzz and fierceness feels
just as timely today as it did 20 years ago. And for those who weren’t around
when it first Happened, here’s your chance. Fist pumping, commence.
Sat., July 23, 8 p.m.; Record Room, 8 N E Killingsworth; $5 includes tape with
digital download; 21+; calirecordsthehappening.bandcamp.com. For more queer girl
power at the Record Room, Berkeley-based electrónica band Violent Vickieperjorms
with D J Gutter Glamour; Tues., July 26; time and cover TBA; reverbnation.com/
violentvickie.
