On June 8, 200 Portlanders filled City Hall to support the
approval of trans-inclusive health benefits for city employees
(blogout.justout.com, “BREAKING: PDX City Council Ap
proves Trans-inclusive Health Care Proposal”)- As members of
Basic Rights Oregon’s Trans Justice Working Group, we are
leading a statewide campaign for trans-inclusive health care.
We want to sincerely thank the entire City Council for
their strong support, and to extend a particular thank you to
Mayor Sam Adams for his unfaltering leadership on this is
sue. Time and time again he has taken a stand to end dis
crimination against transgender Oregonians. In proposing
this ordinance and leading the charge for its passage, he and
his staff have made a profound impact on the lives of trans
City employees, their partners and their families.
This victory makes Portland the third jurisdiction in the
country to provide trans-inclusive health care to its employ
ees, and it would not be possible without the work of Mayor
Adams and Commissioners Fish, Fritz, Leonard and Saltz-
man. This is truly a monumental step towards trans justice in
Oregon and nationwide.
