Can you believe it’s been a whopping 365
days since Portland Pride? It seerns like just
yesterday— the parades (people and pets
alike), the parties, the performances. The
pomp, the prancing, the prettiness (yeah,
you, and your little dog, too).
Yet here we are, a whole 24 hours before
the gates open at Tom McCall W aterfront
Park. At press time, specifics were still trick
ling in from organizers at Pride Northwest.
So we’ve done our darndest to furnish you
with the most complete information for the
festivities, including Main and Community
Stage schedules, details on the Dyke March
and Pride Parade, profiles o f featured enter
tainers and more.
And because Pride isn’t just about the
park, we’re following up on the initial cover-
age o f our June 3 issue with a fully updated
calendar o f events, both established and
late-breaking, and continuing our “Pride-
PTles”of folks and organizations in the com
munity worth getting to know. W e’re also
thinking outside o f the weekend, and city
limits, with a preview o f statewide celebra
tions scheduled throughout the summer.
The only thing we haven’t thought of is the
weather— and well, we’ve thought o f it, and
continue to. Good thoughts, people. All to
gether now, good thoughts.
O f course, we’ll be at the waterfront all
weekend, at Booth 9 in the PABA Village, and
all around town. Come say hi, let’s catch up.
All together now, good thoughts, good
times. See you there, and everywhere.

They craft songs about gay historical figures
such as Kenneth Anger, Charles Darwin and
Alexander the Great. They put on events at
Crush via an artist residency. They’re perform
ing on the Pride festival main stage. They are
Mattachine Social.
“Kids don’t know gay history,” says Andrew
Klaus, 32, of the band’s moniker. “Hence the
name Mattachine Social, after the Mattachine
Society.” He’s referring to one of the earliest
gay rights activist groups, founded in 1950. In
the same breath it takes to describe M atta
chine Social, Klaus mentions Charles Darwin,
“who was kicked off the [HMS] Beagle on the
Galapagos Islands for having an affair with
the captain’s son.”
Klaus, who plays keyboard, bass and sings,
is only a third of Mattachine Social, who have
been playing together for about six months.
The other band members include Justin War
ner, 41, who also sings, and Ben Jansen, 30,
who plays guitar. They describe their sound as
