Normal, Where?
JANE theater company production examines
love, family and change
What happens when one half of a silver-anniversary couple wants a
sex change? What of the blindsided spouse? The dumbfounded chil
dren? Their church congregation? What then? What next?
That’s the premise of Looking for Normal, playwright Jane Ander
son’s domestic comedy-drama with a (trans)gender twist. Presented by
(coincidentally) Portland theater company JANE, the family portrait
opens as Roy, the patriarch of a respected middle American brood, ap
proaches wife Irma with a confession: He’s a woman trapped inside a
man’s body and wants to undergo gender reassignment. W hat’s even
more of a doozy: He drops the bombshell during marriage counseling
with their pastor.
Television viewers may be familiar with Anderson’s play, adapted for
HBO by the scribe herself in 2003—Jessica Lange portrayed Irma to
Tom Wilkinson’s Roy. As the couple, their adolescent tomboy daughter
and grown son struggle with their own life changes—Irma’s in meno
pause, to boot—the family and community at large grapple with the
definitions and dynamics of love, and how it ultimately transcends -
gender.
Tim Smith and Kim Bogus (also JANE’s artistic director) star in the
latest production, what should be a provocative, moving Look at notions
of “normal” life—whatever the hell that is.
