I lived in the Golden State until 1 turned 27, thereupon fleeing
the suffocating summer of 2008, when a massive wildfire in Para
dise, Calif, scorched everything in sight. In the valley below, where
I lived in a theater loft, the smoke poured in and just sat there,
mixing with the 110 degree heat for weeks. It was the worst, and
most cathartic, time of my life. This simple image of cigarettes
smashed into an ashtray adorned with my home state’s name rep
resents almost perfectly, to me, the notion of seemingly glamorous
things eventually ending up a mess.

As a lesbian, I have found that “my people” have a somewhat
obsessive affinity for all things with four legs and a tail. As an
owner of my very own tiny zoo, there is nothing more irresistible
about a dog than the underside of its chin. This photo was a
runner-up, and I just couldn’t let it go unnoticed.
Many incredible photos were submitted in this years contest,
and this one sat on the judging table for a very long time, marked
with a Post-it note that read “Possible cover?” So while it didn’t
win a prize and didn’t make it onto our cover, the image still
deserves a place alongside the winners.
