“Tub Time”
Why did I select this picture, from the many hundreds
submitted? Because this scene made me react immediately
upon viewing it. This photo is a visual representation of my
idea of hell. I have a deep fear of slipping on ice. There, I said
it: I am afraid of ice. Furthermore, about the worst-case ice
scenario ever would be going up, or down, stairs. I would walk
50 miles around these steps just to avoid being where this
woman is. Hell, I tell you. This is the stairway to hell.
In the lineage of bathtub self-portraits, this photo speaks
to that of an inverted Narcissus. Like the young Greek intent
on gazing into his own image, the youth depicted here is fo
cused on a mirror. Yet the subject of his attention is not his
own self, half submerged, cleansing and meditative, but the
self of the audience. I chose this image for its striking simple
beauty and deeper contemplations.
