cast of more than 100 transgender actors
Try this synopsis on for size: an idyllic portrait o f formerly pro-Soviet
sailors at the Kronstadt naval garrison who in 1921 rebelled against the fail
ures o f the new Bolshevik state. Oh, and said based-on-historical-events re
visioning features a film first— a cast o f more than 100 transgender actors.
Not exactly a pitch for the latest mindless Kate Hudson rom-com, eh?
M aggots and Men, an experimental narrative set in a mythologized, post
revolutionary Russia, considers the Kronstadt Uprising with a twist o f
gender anarchy. Film buffs will recall the storied Kronstadt sailors from the
classic Battleship Potemkim , but for M &M , director Cary Croncnwett,
working within the typically male environment o f a naval base, casts his
(F T M ) actors “from a range o f masculine gender expressions,” in what
challenges traditional roles and other binary constructs.
It’s heady, rather curious stuff, but handled deftly, thanks to the presence
o f agit-prop theater group Blue Blouse and a narration that guides viewers
via fictionalized letters written by Stepan Fetrichenko, the leader o f the
Provisional Revolutionary Committee. Through an imagined love story
between Petrichqnko and another sailor, Maggots and Men puts a personal
spin on a national crisis, and documents the rapidly evolving transgender
community in the process.
And if all o f that gender-bending revisionist history has your head spin
ning, filmmaker Cronenwett and actor Sergey Yashenko will be in atten
dance at the June 9 Hollywood Theatre screening to answer those “W hat
were you thinking, anyway?” queries.
Thurs., June 9, 7 p.m.; Hollywood Thea tre, 4122 N E Sandy Blvd.; $7; hol/y-
woodtheatre. org or thefilmcollaborative. org/films/maggotsandmen. html.
