Idol Hands
Portland Idol returns to Red Cap Garage
W hen Red Cap Garage’s Portland Idol
broke ground last year, it drew citywide kudos
tor the professionalism of the assembled talent.
Helmed by Los Angeles-transplant Justin
Buckles, who’d worked as production manager
tor American Idol (yeah, that one), Portland
Idol 2010 instituted similar rules, while inject
ing a distinct club feel to its inaugural year.
In keeping with that vibe, Red Caps Port
land Idol 2011 kicked otf May 5 with much
momentum, some 70 hopefuls whittled down
to just 12 tor opening night. Ibis round’s
judges include the first ever Portland Idol, the
electrifying Tamra Scanlan, along with Samuel
Thomas, founder of the Portland FREE Music
Project. A third judge will rotate from a stable
of past Idol contestants and local celebs.
The competition, as expected, is
nothing short o fierce.
“W ith our host Poison Wa
ters, Portland Idol 2011 started
oft with a bang,” says Buckles.
“Every contestant is bringing
their own special talent this
year, which is going to make for a
very interesting competition.”

too, with first place receiving a $700 prize
