When Just Out spoke with Daily Show co-creator and comic Lizz Winstead
last year, she was trekking the country with her of-the-moment political mus-
ings and writing seminar— in between penning a book. Now she’s back in the
Rose City, as part o f variety broadcast Live Wire! It’s a fitting hill for Winstead,
also a founder o f Air America radio and a trailblazer in a male-dominated in
dustry—or three.
Fellow comic Frank DeCaro called the whip-smart Winstead “a heterosexual
woman so homo-friendly” she ranked among the Out 100. “I would not have a
career without the gay community. It’s a fucking given,” Winstead told Just Out
during a conversation that ranged from the late night television boys’ club to
Prop. 8. “I’m writing this book, and one of the essays is talking about how as a
young girl I never wanted to get married. ... There wasn’t a whole lot of role
models when you were 10, saying, ‘I don’t wanna be a mom and stuff, I wanna
kinda be loud and explore who I am as a woman and a person.’
“There wasn’t a lot of people going, ‘Great, let’s help you out with that’—and
you know who did? Gay folks. Kids who came out in high school were my
friends. We all just kind of embraced, supported each oth er... people who had
to look at their lives and say, ‘Society isn’t grooving on us, we groove on us.m
Along with Winstead, who’s expected to share a bit of her memoir, the last
installment of Live Wirel’s spring season also features authors Erik Larson and
David Shields and musical guests Alela Diane and Ramona Falls.
