Topp That
New Zealand documentary yodels into town
After strong film fest showings (including last year’s QDoc), everybody’s fa
vorite movie about country-singing comic lesbian twins from New Zealand is
back in Portland for a wceldong run. The Topp Twins: Untouchable Girls tells the
inspiring story of crew-cut Kiwi siblings Jools and Linda, a fiftysomething pair
as fearless as they are fun(ny).
Oh, and have we mentioned the yodeling?
Directed by Leanne Pooley, the 2009 documentary chronicles what are inar-
guably extraordinary lives. W hether coming out or spearheading anti-nuke ac
tivism, protesting apartheid or fighting breast cancer, the Topp twins face their
challenges—and mirror a provincial history o f causes and culture— with wry
humor, tremendous love and a stable o f characters that’s pegged them “an anar
chist variety act.”
Rightly so. There are the Ramsbottom socialites, a duo o f bowling gals and
the beer-swilling, polyester-donning farmers Ken. Jools and Linda’s surpris
ingly nuanced creations are matched by their musical talents. It’s easy to under
stand their (long) standing as Kiwi national treasures—sincere without sap,
they change minds and open hearts sans soapbox.
If anything, Pooley s portrait is pleasant to a fault, though it’s o f little detri
ment given the doc’s irrepressibly optimistic subjects. “On paper, yodeling les
bian twins don’t really work,” quips one of the Topps’friends. On film, in their
native New Zealand and beyond, they not only work, they triumph. The Topp
Twins is a feel-good film that feels as true as it gets.
