"Songs of Sondheim” reunites area
talents for benefit concert
The name is synonymous with American theater and
song. For some six decades, Stephen Sondheim {Gypsy,
Sunday in the Park with George, A Little Night Music and
so on) has penned the music and lyrics to our lives—or
at least our most dramatic moments, onstage and off.
Now a new concert for “Sanity on the Streets” reunites
local veteran performers of Sondheim’s oeuvre to honor
the victims of January’s tragedy in Tucson, and to cast a
light on gun violence.
“Songs of Sondheim,” which will benefit local non
profits Ccrimon 1 louse, a “sanctuary for the humanities”
whose namesake was first coined by Shakespeare in
Pericles, and Stumptown Stages, reassembles the Port
land cast of Sondheim’s 1991 classic Assassins—staged
to great fanfare in 2006 by Artists Repertory Theatre.
Not so coincidentally, Stumptown Stages artistic di
rector Kirk Mouser won a Drammy Award that year for
his performance as John Wilkes Booth, and Cerimon
House executive director Randall Stuart was a fellow
Drammy winner for his work as Charles Guiteau (who
shot U.S. President James A. Garfield). The gentlemen
will be joined by a who’s who of area talent for the two-
night event, among them Susannah Mars (to team with
Mouser on “Booth”), Margie Boulc (who’ll “remember
sky”), Brian Bartley and more.
Along with Assassins, the concert will revisit Sond
heim staples Merrily We Roll Along and Evening Prim
rose in what’s shaping up to be an evening of high drama
and higher notes in celebration of the Great White Way
and beyond.
Tues.-Wed., May 17-18, 7 p.m. (silent auction at 6 p.m.);
Alberta Rose Theatre, 3000 N E Alberta St.; S40 assigned
seating in advance, general admission at door; 503-381-
8686 or stumptownstages.com.
