Get ready to rejoice if you’re a fan and collector of art made from alu­
minum silicate. Ihe Oregon Potters Association holds its annual Ceramic
Showcase and Gathering of the Guilds April 29-May 1, and on hand to
intrigue are three very eclectic gay potters.
What do you do after living in a nunnery and becoming a trucker? For
Portland artist Victoria Shaw, the answer was easy—you create art from
clay. Although she didn’t make it as a nun, she maintains her spirituality by
creating beautiful prayer houses and religious totems from clay.
Fugene-based Kenneth Standhart leaves his mark, literally—anywhere
from 500 to 5,000 handmade indentations—on his vessels. His one-of-a-
kind pieces have been on display at the Smithsonian Institute in Washing­
ton, D.C. and the American Embassy in Thailand, just to name a few.
Natalie Warrens, another Portland-based artist who has been throwing
pottery for over 35 years, specializes in creating bright and colorful pieces
with her unique, prc-Portlandia signature—that’s right, a bird—on them.
Warrens recently started employing an ancient firing technique using
wood, a very Northwest ingredient, in what has rekindled her relationship
to her art.
The OPA Ceramic Showcase is the largest annual show and sale of pot­
tery in the nation. With such a diverse group of artists and their varied
wares, this event isn’t going to pot anytime soon.
