CAP Art Auction and Evening
The annual art auction for Cascade AIDS
Project is not only a big event for the gay
community, but typically one of the biggest
philanthropic soirees in the city. It’s also the
biggest contemporary art auction in the Pa
cific Northwest.
And this year, the event will be bigger.
CAP is celebrating its 25th anniversary, so
it’s raising the bar. The art will be better, the
music louder and the venue upgraded from
a rental space in Northeast Portland to the
Memorial Coliseum.
“I think it’s going to be an emotional
event,” says Michael Kaplan, CAP’s execu
tive director. “I want people to feel an impact
and feel hopeful in terms of what we’re
doing.”
Cascade AIDS Project works to prevent
HIV infections and helps people who are
infected. Its work is particularly important
for one of the entertainers at the event—the
Portland Gay Men’s Chorus, which has lost
more than 120 members to AIDS since its
founding in 1980.
“To have the Gay Men’s Chorus playing
the event is very meaningful to us,” says Bob
Mensel, artistic director for PGMC.
The chorus, in fact, planted seed funds
that led to CAP’s creation 25 years ago.
“As I looked at the history of the Cascade
AIDS Project,” Kaplan says, “I saw the role
the Gay Men’s Chorus played in getting
CAP started, and I couldn’t think of a better
partnership than asking them to be part of

The chorus will join other entertainers—
who will play only for $250 Patron ticket
holders. The performers include Storm
Large, Pink Martini’s Thomas Lauderdale
and the Rose City Gay Freedom Band.
Art donated to the event was filtered for
merit by a jury, headed by Terry Hopkins of
the Marylhurst University Art Gym. O f the
works donated, 275 were selected for auc
tion. The top 15 of those will be sold in a live
auction for $250 ticket holders, and the rest
will be sold via silent auction for the $100
ticket holders. Art for the live auction is
available for viewing at capartauction.org.
The 2010 event raised $420,000, about 10
percent of CAP’s budget, and this year CAP
aims to raise that tally to $500,000. Some
1,500 attendees are expected.
