Kent Tikey Magionos
1955-2011
Kent Tikey M agionos o f Lake Oswego,
Ore. died Saturday, March 12 at the age o f
55 as a result o f liver cancer. He was born
August 12, 1955 in Colorado Springs,
Colo., the son o f Tikey and Eugenia M a
gionos. H e spent his early years living in
Peru, Hawaii and Alaska before the family
settled in Eagle Creek, Ore., where he then

School and, soon after, attended
Portland State University.

eye for design quickly earned
him a respect among the interi
or design community, while his
kindness and generosity drove
his deep involvement in many
o f Portland’s charitable organi
zations such as Boys and Girls
Aid Society, Cascade A ID S
Project, Key to the Cure, Our
House and others.
“He never said no’ to anyone
who asked him to sit on a com
mittee,” said Jim Miley, a friend
o f 22 years.

happiest
spending time with his many
endearing friends and family
members who adored him for
his big heart and ability to share
his time and love unconditionally.
“[H e was] giving to a fault, quick-witted,
loving, never judged a soul, laughed with his
whole heart and taught me the meaning o f
patience,” said Stephanie Warden, a friend
o f 26 years. “He lived life with everything
he had to bring to this world.”
M agionos will be remembered by every
one he met for his kind heart, ability to give
and impeccable style.
A memorial service was held March 26.

Kevin Anthony Hendrick
1971-2011
Kevin Anthony Hendrick, 39, a former
resident o f Portland, died March 24 at his
home in Burlington, Vt. A man o f tre
mendous warmth, gentleness, generosity
o f spirit and humor, Hendrick brought joy
and love to others, and built for himself a
life much the same. He also wrestled with
demons stemming from a childhood and
adolescence filled with severe abuse. Those
demons resulted in episodic depression and
substance abuse, which led to his death
from a prescription drug overdose.
Despite the crippling effects o f the abuse
he suffered, Hendrick demonstrated ex
traordinary resilience and strength by forg

care and restaurant in
dustries; played the piano;
was fluent in French;
volunteered for numerous
community organizations;
served his Buddhist temple
in a variety o f roles; built a
family with his partner o f
15 years; managed cross
country moves and made
new homes when they re
located from Texas to O r
egon and then Vermont;
lavished care on their two animal compan
ions, Dionne and Tobias; and smiled and
laughed throughout virtually every day. That
Hendrick could do so much so well and so
lovingly was a testament to his remarkable
spirit, huge heart and innate beauty.
Services were held March 31 at Dharma
Rain Zen Center in Portland. A memo
rial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday,
April 2, at Laurel Heights United M eth
odist Church in San Antonio. Hendrick
is survived by his partner, Thomas Bruner,
and members o f the Bruner, Hendrick and
House families across the country.

memory to the child abuse prevention orga
