Passion Pits
Ruhl’s Passion Play gets the
PAC attack
If you thought Mel Gibson’s hot-button 2004 opus
Passion of the Christ was controversial, what do you think
it was like behind the scenes during production of the
traditional passion plays? Chances are queer relation
ships, marijuana, Hitler and some strikingly Biblical
sexual overtones were likely not part of the theological
equation—or were they?—but that’s exactly the kind of
scenario explored in Sarah Ruhl’s Passion Play.
Ruhl, a two-time Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award
nominee, injects personal, religious and historical poli
tics into the backstage antics of passion plays in three
different time periods: 16th-century England, Hitler’s
Austria and 1970s Spearfish, South Dakota. Depend
ing on the time period, Jesus is hot for Judas, and Mary
the Virgin and Mary Magdalene share some sexual
tension as well. Sound slightly ... experimental? It
seems to be. To boot, it’s being staged by the Portland
Actors Conservatory’s Class of 2011, a group working
under one of the city’s most heralded professional di
rectors, Portland Center Stage Associate Artistic D i
rector Rose Riordan.
“Passion Play is an ambitious project, spanning history,
multiple locations, characters and moves at a dizzying
pace,” said Riordan via press release. “But I thought,
‘W hat better project to work on with actors who are
energetic, curious and still in training? It’s been really
fun and inspiring to work with PAC students.”
