Leave it to the ladies to be ballsy enough to take on
one o f the bastions o f rock ‘n roll— the get-the-Led-out
ladies o f Zepparella, an all-female Led Zeppelin revue.
After five years touring the United States, two live al
bums and stage stints with the likes o f K ISS, Zepparella
drummer Clementine and guitarist Gretchen Menn are
back with two new band members.
One o f these new muses o f rawk happens to be a
Portland girl. Singer Miaya Shambry boasts face-melt
ing chops— and a mastery o f the Plant catalog sure to
impress even the fiercest L Z fan. And bassist Angeline
Saris, hailing from the San Francisco Bay area, has torn
her way up and down fretboards o f jazz to speed metal,
Cuban to hip-hop, flamenco to rockabilly and, yes, clas
sic R & B and rock. (Naturally, she
cites John Paul Jones as a main
influence.)
As with any tribute act, the chal
lenge lies in honoring the legacy o f
a band deemed sacred by its breth
ren and breathing new life into
sonic scriptures the faithful want performed ju st re. That
Zepparella is more than a shrewd, line-toeing gender
gimmick is just the beginning— these rock goddesses
craft their own brew o f improvised magic within Zep
pelin’s iconic discography.
The songs may remain the same, but the looks and
sounds ramble on (c’mon, we had to)— and to an audi
ence o f converts known for notching upwards o f 100
Zepparella shows to their names. If that ain’t proof o f a
whole lotta love...
