Fear No Music brings Elvis Costello’s Juliet Letters
to Aladdin
Somewhere between his long-hair-and-beard phase during 1991’s
plaintive pop gem M ighty Like a Rose and his full return to rock roots with
Ih e Attractions on 1994’s Brutal Youth, Elvis Costello got in touch with
his classical side. Long revered as a songsmith hell-bent on excavating the
outer reaches of the music sphere to craft multicultural and multigenera-
tional tunes, Costello collaborated with the Brodsky Quartet on 1993’s 7 he
Juliet Letters, in what showcased his malleable musicianship to a whole
new audience.
Fear No Music, Portland’s 21st-century classic ensemble, is teaming up
with some of the city’s most talented performers for a onc-night-only re-
visitation of Costello and the Brodsky Quartet’s experimental epoch.
1 landling the song cycle of The Ju liet Letters —a concept album of sorts,
based on an imaginary correspondence between a Veronese academic
who’d taken on the task of responding to letters addressed to Juliet Capu-
lct—is up-and-coming local talent Leah Yorkston, multidisciplinary artist
and folk hero I lolcombe Waller, classically trained tenor Stephen Marc
Beaudoin and mezzo-soprano Angela Niederloh.
Having developed a reputation as a bit of a chameleonic group them­
selves, Fear No Music’s wide-ranging approach to uniting musicians and
artists from different disciplines and media fits in flawlessly with the spirit
of Costello’s vision. Certain to he steeped in both resounding, dramatic
movements of melancholy (see “Dear Sweet Filthy W orld”) and slight
insanity (see “Swine”), this production is likely the closest you’ll come to
seeing Costello live in Portland anytime soon.
