Portland Oregon Women’s Film Fest Suits Up for
Fourth Annual Event
The cream o f the crop in women’s filmmaking hits the big screen for
the fourth annual installment o f the Portland Oregon Women’s Film
Festival. Following months o f jurying more than 400 entries o f all
lengths and topics from female filmmakers around the world, POW
Fest has whittled its lineup down to a wide-ranging cast o f indie cin
ema newcomers and seasoned pros.
Arab-American Portland native Rolla Selbak’s Three Veils will enjoy
its world premiere on opening night at the Hollywood Theatre. The
film focuses on the trials o f three young Middle Eastern women living
in the United States, each with controversial pasts. The recipient o f a
2008 Faerie Godmother Fund grant, Selhak will he on hand following
the screening to discuss the film. Plenty o f other local flavor will be
showcased during POW Fest, too, including Nancy Rodwan’s Imper
fect Armor , Bonnie Root’s Sissy and Erin Connelly’s Flying High ,
Standing Tall.
The short film Cried Suicide —directed by Lauren Palmigiano— ex
plores the tale of Jay and her best friend, who accept condolences after
a fake suicide attempt designed to gain attention from her on again-
ofl again girlfriend. Pussy , a film by Debbie Howard, tells a story of
sexual bullying at school in three minutes, while Christine Elise M c
Carthy’s Bathing and the Single Girl describes a thirtysomething
woman’s search for a more suitable mate following a harrowing ro
mantic drought.
To cap it all off, this year’s POW Fest Pioneer Award will be pre
sented to director Gillian Armstrong ( Little Women), who’ll screen her
latest documentary, Love, Lust & Lies.
By empowering filmmakers and audiences alike to find their voice,
this year’s POW Fest makes for a very loud statement, indeed.
