Twice the
Brilliance
Tw o young stars put
their unique spin on a
classical piece
If there were such a thing as Port
land queer music royalty, Thomas
Lauderdale would be crowned king.
This unconventional, classically
trained pianist catapulted to world
wide recognition with his band,
Pink Martini, and his unconven
tional take on retro-lounge music.
Come late February, he’ll again
show us how dilferent can be good
with Thomas Lauderdale Plays
Grieg, putting his unique spin on
Edvard Grieg’s “Concerto in A
Minor”—a much-loved piece in the
classical repertoire. Lauderdale will
be guided by Mexican-born female
conductor Alondra de la Parra, who’s
been hailed as one of the bright
young stars in the world of classical
music. De la Parra founded the New
York-based Philharmonic Orchestra
of the Americas when she was just
23 years old and also serves as music
director of Vermont’s Music Festival
of the Americas. The Portland date
marks her debut with the Oregon
Symphony.
I was first introduced to Lauder
dale’s music while working in the
Yamhill Marketplace building many
moons ago. During my afternoon
breaks, I would hear the beautiful
tinkling of piano keys emanating
from one of the lofts surrounding my
office. It was piano music as I’d never
heard before—utterly enchanting, at
once familiar and unfamiliar. Only
later did I learn that Lauderdale’s
studio was a block from where I
worked and what I’d heard was him
practicing. I’m sure he will enchant
me all over again with his take on
another true original.
