i«e_« WWW.JUSTOUT.COM FEBRUARY 4, 2011 Gettin’ Desi With It Safety in Numbers goes to Bollywood for fundraiser bynickmattos If you’re a fan of I lindi cinema, you probably don’t need an excuse to leap up and twirl. Want an opportunity to do so for a good cause? Shake out your sari and support one of the nation’s oldest rape crisis hotlines—come to Safety in Numbers Goes to Bollywood, benefiting the Portland Women’s Crisis Line. Working the decks and keeping folks clap ping on the dance floor will be Portland’s pre mier Desi deejay, Anjali. She and her partner, the Incredible Kid, have built a solid fan base with crazily fun party nights like Atlas and An- "daz, and for good reason: They’ve mastered the perfect mix of technical skill, a mind-bogglingly diverse record collection and the intuitive aware ness of what tracks will get a crowd jumping. If you need inspiration, though, Safety in Numbers has you covered—they’ll also fea ture local dance troupes such as Bollywood Movez, show casing the best Indian dance that Portland has to offer. When it’s time to let the sweat evaporate from your sari, saunter over to Roving Horse Henna’s mehndi tattoo booth and get made up like an Indian bride. Sure, henna may bring back memories of Ray of Light-era Madonna, but in the skilled hands of Wendy Rover, the ancient art form of temporary skin dec oration becomes timeless, chic and fabulous again. Besides, you’ll think of the fun night every time you look at your hands for weeks to follow. Best of all, Safety in Num bers is fun with a purpose. All proceeds from ticket sales and the event’s silent and live auctions benefit the Portland Women’s Crisis Line, which has worked since 1972 to empower those who have experienced domestic violence and halt the oppression that contributes to a culture of abuse. The crisis line answers more than 26,000 calls each year from people seeking help— and they need your support to keep pro viding those women with critically needed services. So throw on your salwar kameez and get down Desi-style. There’s not just safety in numbers, there’s community.
