Ibis stage reading is described as
a gender-bending tale ot friendship,
love, loss and wigs set in a hair salon
in Chinquapin, La., where six South­
ern “ladies” come together to trade
advice and hairspray.The role ofTru-
vy (portrayed bv Dolly Barton in the
movie) is brought to lite by Portland’s
own chocolate diva, Poison Waters;
Annelle (Daryl Hannah) by Kam
Sisco; Clairee (Olympia Dukakis) by
Tim m McBride; M ’Lynn (Sally
Fields) bv Gary Cash; and Shelbv/
Sheldon (Julia Roberts, whose char­
acter apparently has a male twin in
this rendition) is plated by Michael
Stone.
Toss in the most perfect casting,
that of Darcelle XV herself in the
role of Ouiser (portrayed bv Shirley
M acLaine onscreen), and my head
just exploded from the mere thought
ot such a fabulously gay undertak­
ing. The performance is part o f the
PDX Pride Reading series and is
