its installation at Pivot (209 SW Fourth Ave.)
for the month o f February. The opening recep
tion tor the unveiling o f C A P ’s 25th Anniver
sary archive takes place February 3 and will
feature a comprehensive timeline developed by
volunteer Tom McConnell, which can be dis
assembled and moved to install at various lo

able on C A P ’s new website, also set to be
unveiled February 3.
“1 think the coolest thing is it’s gone way
beyond just being an archive of CAP,’’ explains
Rizzio. “It’s really become this archive of how
HIV unfolded in Oregon. Especially in the
metro area. That, to me, has been amazing.”
Kaplan agrees that the arc the project took
has been not just an amazing thing to witness,
but also a helpful tool in moving forward.
“I think honoring the folks who’ve been in
volved with it long before I ever came to town is
the only way to move forward,” says Kaplan. “If
we don’t honor what they did and engage them,
they’re not going to want to be part of what we
do today. So, for me, it’s been hugely helpful.”
The installation at Pivot won’t be the only
time the archive will be available. Aside from
being on the website, the archive— to be housed
at C A P’s offices—will always be open to who
ever wants to see it, says Rizzio.

the future, and her efforts at ensuring the ar

chive is an educational tool— most notably
with the emotionally charged oral history she
helmed— marks an integral aspect o f this
remembrance.
“I asked every single person as the last ques
tion, ‘So, after all this, where would you like to
see CAP go to?’” sums up Rizzio. “What was
amazingly similar between everyone was they
really took their time and thought about it and
said, in a nutshell, “Keep to your mission, but
make sure that mission is changing to the
needs o f how HIV is moving.’ ... People urge
us to do what we can to stay here and to con
tinue meeting the needs o f people with HIV,
no matter how hard it is. Because the need’s
right now, and [for] the people that are there
right now with HIV, it’s tough.
“There are a lot o f tears, and these are people
