Wednesday, January 12 at 7 p.m. The sermon
for this annual event will be delivered by the
Reverend David E. Wcekley, the first openly
transgender pastor in the United M ethodist
Church, with a special appearance by mem
bers o f the Portland Gay Men’s Chorus.
While this free event is in commemoration
o f Aelred of Rievaulx— a 12th century Eng
lish abbot in the Cisterian order— the signifi
cance o f this mass with relation to the Rev.
Weekley’s participation, as well as P G M C ’s, is
noted by Integrity as an important event to
highlight the issue of homosexuality within
Christianity. St. Aelred is widely speculated
by scholars of his essays and letters to have
been gay. He was adopted as Integrity’s patron
in 1987.
The event will include both the traditional
prayer for St. Aelred’s Day and new prayers for
the EGBTQ_community, and will finish with
communion. The Retired Reverend Michael J.
Hanley, Bishop of Oregon, has written a special
blessing for the occasion, and a reception will
follow the event in the parish hall. Email Ore
gon integrity@gmail.com for more information.
