Response to national news o f teenage LGBTQ_suicide, the need for increased transgender aware ness, same-sex parenting support and community resources for senior members of the L G B T Q com m unity all contributed to a boon in providing information to those who need it. The Sexual and Gender Minority Youth Resource Center continued its ex cellent programming as a safe, welcoming space for LGBTQ_youth in the Portland metro area. Through its Bridge 13 training program—which offers strategies for inter rupting bullying and problematic language and behaviors, among other de-escalating tactics— SMYRC stood on the forefront of local youth activism following an alarming number of suicides among the nation’s L G B T Q jo u th . Another vocal presence, TransActive Education and Advocacy lobbied for edu cation and awareness statewide and beyond for transgender and gender non-conform ing rights. Executive Director Jenn Burleton called out the LGBTQ_community in No vember, following the Q_Center’s “W e are H ere” Youth Forum, in an effort to bolster support for earlier childhood education for gender non-conforming expression and for g a y lesbian, bi and trans people that reaches out to Latinos and Latinos by organizing events and retreats and advocating HIV prevention.
